| Lights – Cactus In The Valley Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I guess this song could be for her parents from the perspective of a cactus (lol). She wanted to be "tall" but instead, she withered because "like a fool [she] left the river (her home maybe)" and plants cannot survive without water, so she was very thirsty and was "about to crumble down". She is very sorry for ever leaving referring to her past actions as "yesterday's disgrace", but she would still very much like for her parents (or lover I suppose) to at least have the decency to remember her name instead of rejecting her altogether. Then the desert storm eventually finds her as a cactus, and I suppose it was the worst part of her life. But it comes and goes and when it's gone it leaves her in a state of confusion, uncertainty, and weakness. She feels completely isolated and alone, and would like someone to come find her and help her. Oh, Lights! I'll find you. :'( |

| The Tremulance – You Got the Girl Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Uhhh idk about anyone else, but this whole song just sounded like it was about sex to me so here's interpretation 1: His "grip is solid" and he's being a bit rough (hehehe), but she "can't say no" because she is "taken by [him]" / really likes the guy. you're sizing me up = you're looking at me up and down you're making me blush = I'm embarrassed i'm not pretty enough = I'm not good enough for you i'm drunk as fuck = but I don't care because I'm drunk as fuck Then she goes on to say "I'm yours... you win... are you happy?" because she wants him to be happy. OR here's the "I'm in an abusive as fuck relationship but I still love him for x reason" interpretation #2: hell, your grip is solid on me = you're very violent i'm delicate you know / i'm delicate i'm told = I'm fragile physically and emotionally why can't you be careful with me? = your abuse hurts me you never let me go = your abuse never stops and i just can't say no = I can't say no because you're bigger than me cause you are what i was missing = but I need you what, what can i do now? / im taken by you now = because I have nowhere to go if we breakup or divorce because of my current circumstances (maybe housewife with no job, maybe family doesn't/won't accept her, maybe has no friends) you're sizing me up = you're checking me out because you know you could take me on physically you're making me blush = sometimes you say the sweetest things i'm not pretty enough = but other times you say the meanest things and/or insult me i'm drunk as fuck = I'm numb from it all and turn to drinking (or possibly drugs) to 'escape' my problems i'm yours hook and sinker = you completely dominate me you know you win this round = you always win she's down = I am probably quite literally 'down' on the floor (ouch) you're the winner this time = I can't stand up to you, therefore you always win arguments are you happy you got that girl? = ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? DOOROODOOROO!! (*cough* Michelle Branch) So yeah, I'd be happy to hear someone else's interpretation that they got from the song though. |

| The Used – Earthquake Lyrics | 15 years ago |

One of my favorite Used songs! Now time for me to decipher this baby... She had an earthquake on her mind I almost heard her cry out as I left her far behind and knew the world was crashing down around her Despite what most people think, I believe this whole song is solely about ONE girl and not two. The "earthquake" in her mind seems to be a hindrance of some sort, a time of trouble, but what exactly the situation is isn't made quite clear. The point is that in her time of trouble, the guy wasn't there for her. He knowingly walked out on her during the worst time of her life. I guess I sort of see it like this: during a real earthquake, you would never purposely leave a loved one behind to be trampled on [and quite possibly die] by rubble, would you? I sink now to the ocean floor because I know that we are more but I've made this mess I built this fire, Are you still mine? The guy fell into a deep deep misery, as deep as the "ocean floor" out of sheer guilt and love. Seems to me he loved this girl that he abandoned and he's blaming himself for not having reached out a hand. He made their relationship's own funeral, he "made this mess," and he's putting all the blame upon himself. Cause baby I'm not all right when you go I'm not fine, Please be all mine I never want you to go because I am all yours so please be all mine. That last line always gets to me! In fact, I don't think this part needs to be interpreted at all. She had an earthquake on her mind apparently the kind that would bury us alive by putting all this weight on us forever I lie here on the ocean floor broken castle by the shore and I made this mess I built this fire, Are you still mine? The disturbance in her mind affected the two of them. They will both forever remember their relationship as a very sad and depressing one. The guy is still stacking all the blame upon himself and for some reason or another doesn't want her to leave despite the discourse that has happened between them. He still wants her to stay with him; he still loves her. "Broken castle by the shore" just suggests to me that the guy's manhood was "broken." (Not literally!) To me, a castle conveys an image of a man's domain, his territory, his manhood. Let me save us I've slaughtered us, I've murdered our love I can taste it, This blood in my mouth This knife in my lungs Have I murdered our love? Let me see if I can turn this into modern words. "Let me still salvage this relationship! I ruined everything, and not just ruined, SLAUGHTERED! MURDERED! I've really done it. Have I really murdered our love? Oh god, I've done it..." This is a sweet ass song, imho. |

| Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Coldplay is the bomb! Now that that's out of the way, it's very obvious that this song is about a fallen king. Specifically, though, I believe it is about Napoleon Bonaparte, the previous emperor of France and king of Italy. To brush up on a little history, Napoleon basically came out on top after the French Revolution beheaded the old king Louis XVI. He took over much of Europe very quickly through his military genius, but similar to Hitler, lost it all just as fast. He was eventually exiled to a small island called Elba near Italy, made a comeback to France to retake the throne, then lost it again and was banished to the island of St. Helena where he died. Of course, this very short and brief summary about him doesn't do him any justice at all! You must read up about this man. He was brilliant and influenced France in so MANY different ways. Sure, some people consider him a tyrant, but he DID establish the Napoleonic Code which forbade special privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and made sure government jobs went to the most qualified. I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own Napoleon Bonaparte used to pretty much rule Europe. He had a Grand Armee, which was exactly what it sounds like, a great army that had about 550,000 men at its best of times. Once he gave the word for his army to be somewhere or to do something, they did as he commanded. When Napoleon eventually loses it all and becomes banished, he lives a lonely life on the island of Elba. Elba is a part of Italy, therefore one can infer that he used to once own it since he was the king of Italy at one point. I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing "Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!" Napoleon is a military genius! A genius! He knew it, and his enemies knew it. Nobody could out-general him on the battlefield. He really did put fear in his enemies eyes. The rolling of the dice mentioned probably just means that he had to order which military tactic to use and then hope the enemy didn't think of something better, which they didn't. So naturally his people back in France loved him. They themselves beheaded the old King Louis XVI whom they hated, and Napoleon gradually became the new emperor. (Although the title of king and emperor are different, the fact is that they are both monarchs.) One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand One minute Napoleon had everything. For a very short amount of time, he had EVERYTHING, but it didn't last. He soon found himself exiled on an island, where his new "castle" stood. The pillars of salt and sand, I believe, are references to the beach on the islands. I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field I don't know for sure, but I'm going to guess that "Jerusalem" and the "Roman Cavalry" are being called upon to help Napoleon out. To be his "sword and shield" would mean he were asking them to fight for and defend him. Next, his "missionaries", I believe, refer to his followers. When the Grand Armee was disbanded, many of them were exiled to Texas. Since Texas is in the US, his followers were indeed in very foreign fields. Not even on the same continent! For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world When Napoleon ruled "the world", he had to play the game of politics. He probably promised one group of people something, promised another group something else, and made many lies to keep his empire together. One example of dishonesty could be that whenever Napoleon goes into battle or fights, he always says his primary purpose for doing so is peace. In 1797, he led his army into Austria and forced them to negotiate peace. Do you see how he can be two-faced here? "Forced" to "negotiate" peace. That's just politics, baby! It was the wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become Napoleon began to lose. A lot. (On a side note, hey look everyone! Alliteration! Wicked-wild-wind.) His biggest mistake was trying to invade Russia. There, he pretty much lost his Grand Armee and his people definitely couldn't believe what he had reduced to. He began to lose battles, land, and pretty much everything... Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king? His people now wait for his "head on a silver plate". In other words, the guillotine (which the French invented!). He was just a puppet, trying to be led and persuaded by different political groups, and a lonely one at that. Nobody should want to be king, to lead such a lonely and terrible life. That concludes my interpretation. Damn, that was long. |
