What I love about the Mountain Goats is how deep the lyrics can be on so many levels. This one is a good example. I can easily see how this is a pretty dark song about someone at the end of their rope. But its funny to me that if this song were applied to another person's experiences it could be construed as a legit worship tune... |

I think this all about being a slave to your own sin. "The holding tank I've built for myself" and "the cell that holds my body back" are the sin that we are a prisoner to. "the beast being led in on the chain" is the tough moment that is being put right in front of you, a moment where you might choose poorly. But then after the beast is brought in is says " I know you're thinking of me because its just about to rain. This means that when we are having tough trials or temptations God is shaping our character through love and perseverance. In other words, "I know God's thinking of me because its just about to rain." After this when we reflect on the good that God can bring out of a bad situation the writer ends with "So I won't be afraid of anything ever again." |
