The Decemberists – Calamity Song Lyrics 13 years ago
Tinneal, I think you had it right about Mexico. I think he's saying Mexican people are "tribes" of Spain in a sort of lost tribes of Israel way.

The Mountain Goats – Pale Green Things Lyrics 13 years ago
I could be way off base, but it could be now that he's grown, he can see himself acting the same way his stepfather did, taking out his loneliness & fear on someone younger or weaker than himself. "Flicking my tongue out" could be giving someone a tongue lashing, or sharpening his tongue on them, and the wet leaves represent younger/weaker people.

The Mountain Goats – Ezekiel 7 and the Permanent Efficacy of Grace Lyrics 14 years ago
Like a couple of you have already said, I think this song is from the point of view of a drug user who tortured someone and then left him for dead. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard it was this news story: http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/05/19/phoenix.drug.kidnappings/

The "clear as an insect's wings" and "blasting off" sounds like a reference to crystal meth. He's getting high and trying to focus on the songs on the radio and whether he's making good driving time in order to keep his mind off the horrific thing he did, but it keeps coming back to him and he just can't forget how he tied a man up and tortured him for hours.

It's a very visual song. I can almost see the narrator stepping out of a dingy motel into a wet desert, then driving in the rain, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel and singing only to be interrupted by a flashback of a bloody floor and tortured man. Powerful stuff.
