| Tom Waits – Step Right Up Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| CONSUMERISM.... the wonderful little world we all live in. Nothing is too scary. There is a product to "fix" just anything | |

I have never been able to get enough of "the fiddler fiddles something so sublime." That line is superb. |

| Tom Waits – I Want You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Perfect early Tom Waits. This song never gets old. Not much else to say. He wants her. He hopes she wants him back. The one thing I would add it he never seems to do the gushing love song. This may seem like it but he is qualifying his love and saying he will do these things IF she feels the same way. Much different than throwing himself at a girl who doesn't even know he exists. He is look for a sign. That is the true hopeless romanticism that made early Tom so so great. |

| Tom Waits – Hang Down Your Head Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I agree this song does not seem personal but I didn't get the "moved on and returned" vibe. To me, it seems like he is on his way out "the train takes me away from you." Though, this always seemed metaphorical. Her actions have torn him away, made it feel like he is on a train being lead away. I always got the image of a soldier off at war and his sweetheart at home has cheated on him and left him. | |
| Tom Waits – 9th & Hennepin Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Through the yellow window of a midnight train.... that line always captivated me. I could picture a disconnected businessman tired in a loose suit, leaning his head on the glass and watching the world pass him by. | |
| Tom Waits – I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I love the turn in the 4th verse... I hope YOU don't fall in love with ME. After exposing all of his fears of commitment he realizes he is falling for her and now must face the realization she may return the favor. You can feel the pain of a man afraid of commitment in this song. He fumbles and worries and once he finally gets the confidence to face her, well it was too late. She is gone. And he knows he missed his shot. Very well done. |

| Bob Dylan – Beyond Here Lies Nothin' Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I look at this song in the context of the album and Dylan's life. First of all Together For Life implies the overall theme of the album is a love that has lasted through it all. Second, the album's inspiration mostly came from border towns in Texas/Mexico, very metaphorical for an ending "beyond which lies nothing". Thinking about Dylan's life, the only love that has lasted through the years (many women have come and gone) is his love for music, something that has never and will never abandon him. They have been "together through life". I feel this song is more of a realization that there is not much left. He is in the proverbial sunset of his career or to keep with the albums symbolism, he is reaching the borders with his music. Hence, nothing but the mountains of the best, beyond here there is "nothing we (him and music) can call their own. I feel this song is an all time great for Dylan. |
