Sufjan Stevens – Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part 1: The World's Columbian Exposition; Part 2: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) Lyrics 12 years ago
The second part is, overall, Sufjan having a dream about talking to the ghost of Carl Sandburg (who was a very famous poet and writer). It seems like he is having a conversation with the ghost about writing, the way it starts out sounds like he is frustrated with writing (I cried myself to sleep last night), and asks Carl for advice on writing. Towards the beginning it also sounds like he's suffering from depression possibly feeling alone in the world (even in my best condition...I am riding all alone) They have a conversation, about him feeling alone, confused, like his writing isn't good enough. Carl lectures him a bit, asks him if he's writing from the heart, and to trust his instinct and know he's a good writer. "even in his heart the devil has to know the water level" is a line I'm still trying to work out.

Andrew Bird – Weather Systems Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics to this seem to fit Bird's personality pretty well. When I hear this, all I can think of is him for some reason. Bird is kind of a crazy genius, and like he's said before has led him to some pretty intense struggles with depression and relationship problems. So I think the lyrics have a lot to do with emotions and depression "quiet, quiet down she said, speaking to the back of his head" is almost like he's lost in thought again, frantically thinking and not being able to focus on anything else. And she's telling him to just clear his mind, because she can see how depressed he is. "hold still a while, don't spill the wine" meaning just be happy for a bit, don't waste something good. She wants to see him happy for a while instead of in his usual gloomy state. "Every time you turn to soil, another cloud begins to boil" - Every time he's down, the world seems gloomier again. Like when he looks down, the skies turn gray. That's what I get out of the song, anyway. Just someone watching someone else struggle with depression, and trying to help them.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics 13 years ago
This song in a lot of ways makes me think of the movie The Ice Storm. Especially because the line about the parents. If you've ever seen the movie (not to spoil), someone dies when he gets hit by a power line, it's about the shattered dreams and boring lives of adults, wanting to spice up life, and about kids going through the normal changes and being naturally curious. Either way the song is really excellent.

Owen Pallett – Furniture Lyrics 13 years ago
I looovee this song. Sometime's it's how I feel about romance...

To me, this song is about someone who hates his father, probably because he was somewhat of a womanizer or just enjoyed sleeping around. It sounds to me like he's very close to his mother, but because she was hurt by this man in some kind of short-lived relationship, he grew to feel like love isn't real or he shouldn't trust anyone

I love how he uses the term "Furniture" as some kind of metaphor. Furniture is so easy to just move around and make it do what you want, put it in any position and just use it. Kind of like how some marriages are.

Andrew Bird – Not a Robot, But a Ghost Lyrics 14 years ago
Whenever I hear that line, I automatically think of how people feel right after a breakup, like how a lot of people say "I'll never love again, etc.." I hear the clockwork in your core, time strips the gears till you forget what they were for makes me think of the heart, and how after a while you kind of just wanna forget about heart break and love all together. Or, you know, something along those lines.

Owen Pallett – This Is the Dream of Win & Regine Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's a song about how hard it is to be a couple when you're famous. "Crown myself the prince of buzz" to me means that he's someone popular in the media, and it's hard to maintain a normal relationship when the media is always portraying you in some sort of way, and never giving you privacy. Not to mention you're always busy, so keeping up a relationship is hard. It's about just trying to live a normal life when famous, and wishing everyone would leave them alone.

Owen Pallett – The Arctic Circle Lyrics 14 years ago
Diggory, in French, can be translated to astray, which means to lead away from the right path or direction. So he could mean tell lies that lead you away from the truth. At least that's what I get from it :)
