If I do recall correctly, the 4th paragraph is from Interview with the Vampire. Which is weird because their Sing the Sorrow album reminds me of that series. |

Oh man, this one's hardcore. "There is nothing to me. There is nothing though there was a time I had felt elation before all sensation died" He makes sure at the beginning of the song that he points out very clearly that he is numb. He cannot feel anything any longer. but he then goes back to tell this listener that at once he had an overwhelming and beautiful emotion before he went numb...so..something happened, we guess at this point. "I cannot breathe. I can't deny that I've been feigning for you every vital sign defied" In order to live, you must breathe...which means in the simplest of symbols, breathing=life. Davey is making the statement here that he is not and has not been able to live. Now he is admitting that he has been faking; he has put a mask over and fought his true emotions, which he is about to reveal. "This means nothing to me. This means nothing so spare me the lies. I deny you sympathy just as I have been denied." Basically here he is saying that he doesnt want to hear anything from her, none of her sob stories, he doesnt care just like she didn't care (obviously, someone broke his heart) ... "I died for the last lie and the heartbreak for the first time I could not take till I made you cry" Davey is now stating that she hurt him too much...now he wants to show her how he feels. He wants to break her heart like she broke his. "This is what you taught me. This is what you taught-and I learned well- To recognize that feeling easily can be disspelled." Now he's throwing it back into her face letting her know that he learned it all from her. He isn't stupid anymore and he knows how to turn the tables. I also feel like "to recognize that feeling easily can be disspelled." means that he knows she loved him, but she was a bitch about it and didn't know what to do with that love...now he isn't denying his love for her, but he is resentful in accepting it. he's pushing it away because he knows what it will get him and he knows he deserves better. "Show your wounds, I'm bored with mine. Nothing is new. Don't despair, I rarely cry." Here I imagine Davey jerking back the sleeves of the girls shirt to reveal cuts. He's tired of being the only one hurting. "Oh my dear, please dry your eyes. Who could harm you? To hurt you is to be despised, As I'd love to. " He's putting it on thick here. Basically telling her that no one ever hurts that "precious little princess" so she needs to stop whining and acting hurt. Then he very obviously states the desire to hurt her. Will he though? The lyrics kind of leave that in the air. I think this, in real life, would be as far as he would go with trying to hurt her. but who knows. I guess that's left for the listeners interpretation. In general I love the attitude of the song. A very powerful smack in the face message, however, the lyrics are extremely easy to read into, not like AFI's old stuff. Their old songs were left more to the interpretation and there was more than one answer. Now it's very obviously just the one message. |

I honestly think that this is about either sex or drugs. Whatever is your "medication" and fits you as a person. Whatever you might "loose yourself" in. I LIKE this album..but I have to say that I feel like AFI has become more mainstream. It's very disappointing for me. I don't feel like their songs on this album are as deep as other albums. I still love davey. He's a beautiful man. |

It seems to me there's some sort of powerful male figure here... "With just a look they shook And heavens bowed before him Simply a look can break your heart" In these next lyrics it seems as though, even though he is a powerful person, he avoids responsibility, and others had to pay the consequences; they were left alone. "The stars that pierce the sky He left them all behind We're left to wonder why He left us all behind" "Dreams of his crash won't pass Oh, how they all adored him Beauty will last when spiraled down" and here ^ a "crash" is referred to...so in his running, he failed at some point and came crashing to death. Here theyre mourning his death and remembering him. "The stars that mystify He left them all behind And how his children cry He left us all behind" Now with his responsibility left behind...they are alone and there is no one to take care of them. "What's the hook, the twist, within this verbose mystery? I would gladly bet my life upon it That the ghost you love, your ray of light will fizzle out Without hope We're the empty set, just flowing through, wrapped in skin Ever-searching for what we were promised Reaching for that golden ring we'd never let go But who would ever let us put our filthy hands upon it?" Here is seems like davey is singing out to those hurting, those who were promised things then abandoned. he's stating his ignorance for why, but in his reference to a hook...he in confirming that there IS a reason for it all... "But who would ever let us put our filthy hands upon it?" is basically saying that we may not be good enough to know the answers, ever. |
