She did something that changed their relationship, not something bad necessarily, but the change meant they could no longer be together.. you know, how sometimes a small little thing can render you incompatible with someone. But feelings are still there and the air is knocked out of you when you realise you can't be with the one you love... you feel like you're drowning with every gasp of air, because your love for that Mr Wrong is so overwhelming and it washes over you like the sea.

Whenever I listen to this song, the imagery reminds me of the movie Stealing Beauty.

I love this song but I have a hard time figuring out what it means... when I listen to it I get a feeling of hopelessness, like not being able to keep up with the times, turning obsolete, not being able to understand or get with the program, the zeitgeist, etc...

anyone?

Ed Harcourt – God Protect Your Soul Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the song's about always putting a wall between you and the world, being defensive and not letting people see the real 'you'. But there's a desire within you to get to know people better and have them know the real you and not the 'pantomime' you perform for the public, but being too insecure or afraid to do so. So you want others to show themselves to you while you still keep your true self hidden away from the world, like a two-way mirror; you can see them, but they can't see you - perhaps they only think they can but you know better... and in a way it's killing you inside to not be able to let your guard down.

Ed Harcourt – Birds Fly Backwards Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow - this is such a great song and no one's commented on it!

Well I guess I can be the first :)

This song helped me so much when my longest relationship ended. I had been with my then-boyfriend (now ex) for 3 years and was so sure we were going to get married. But nothing lasts forever and feelings change yada yada, and we broke up.

Although I was really sad and lost for a while, in time (about a month later, after I did my mourning), I felt really positive, relieved and happy to be free. The world was my oyster and I could do anything I wanted, see anyone I wanted, and just be ME.

So when he sings "Sad, blue... the world is upside down, and birds fly backwards.." that was how I felt the moment we broke up and for a good month afterwards. "Packed bags in the hallway where we used to play all day, We're hitting the road that leads us back again," is reflecting back on the relationship, missing it and realising I won't be playing in the hallway anymore, I'm hitting the road again, back to where I was before I met him. And it was melancholy but a time of anticipation, too. Like, what will I do, where will I be in a months time? in 3 months? 6 months? A year? "Sad, blue, the future's not too clear" seems to be about that time.

The he changes tune and says "Clouds tower, I have nothing to fear" because even though it seems overwhelming to be out there, single in the world after thinking you've left it for good for the safety of a relationship, there's nothing to be afraid of, it's all a big adventure :)

As it happens, I am in a totally different country/continent now, and enjoying myself meeting new people, doing new things (recently got certified as an open water diver - whooo!) and just living my life on my terms. This song makes em smile every time I hear it.

Mew – Special Lyrics 16 years ago
My Japanese friend confirmed the rumours for me that Agarina is in fact a very familiar, informal way of inviting someone into your home, and can also mean to take someone into your heart.

So yeah.

And the song to me just means that there's someone you feel so strongly for, it's like a crazy, love at first sight, obsessive addiction to a person that you also know is very bad for you. Your body and your heart crave their presence, their touch, but your mind sees the bigger picture and it's like a nightmare, and you know it.

But your heart still wants to defy what your consciousness recognises (and perhaps things the toxic object of your affection had bluntly spelled out to you) and says "I know you said to me, but I don't care at the same time" because it still wants to give in to the craving and get the "fix" your body physically craves. To your own detriment (fully aware of it, of course).

Mew – 156 Lyrics 16 years ago
Personally, I connected with the lyrics to this song very strongly when I had gone through a really bad experience with a man.

To me, it's about giving someone your all, almost to the point where you're just obsessed with them, your thoughts are always with what they want, how they are doing, instead of your own well-being... and having all that thrown back into your face and being taken completely for granted.

Then, you wake up and realise they aren't the perfect beings you thought they were once, they aren't beyond reproach, and all the little things you thought meant something crumble and turn to dust, sifting through your clenched fists. When you finally let go, there's nothing there to let go of. It's been slipping away all along. And all you can think of is wanting to hurt them so bad, the way they hurt you.

But you don't because you're a bigger person. You remain calm, you let karma do its thing... and it does. And that's when you get your bittersweet revenge, when they get their come uppance, a taste of their own medicine. And then you leave, forever.

Don't you just love goodbyes?

I think this song is mainly about how screwed up relationships are and how they can turn us into rotten beings inside.
