I think it's about any kind of addiction, whether it be a drug, a person, or a behavior. Under the influence of a concsiousness altering substance people do things they would never participate in otherwise. Authorities and parents warn us of the danger "devil" of drugs and of possible consequences of experimenting with them. This forbidden fruit is the candy. It's holds the secret to an anticipated immediate pleasure, which is much more reliable and desirable then the flawed advice of others. The second verse illustrates the resistance an addict would have to suggestions and information offered by peers and elders. These are listened to politely but rejected in favor of the high. the addict is essentially in love with his self minded escape and the mind is completely occupied thinking about the next hit. I think lyrics are at their best when they can take on many meanings. It enables the listener to find common ground rather than being limited rigidly to one specific thing. |
