| The Waterboys – Fisherman's Blues Lyrics | 16 years ago |

The first two verses are about finding transendence in an enthralling crazed environment heightened even further by having your love beside you. Think "the prow of the Titanic with Kate and Leo" if you must. The last verse is about death and some permanent spiritual satisfaction or enthrallment afterwards. See Dantes and his beloved and idealized Beatrice for a reference point. Or Van Morrison's "and together we both will flow, 'Into the Mystic'", for the most obvious inspiration. The fisherman could be either Christ and his apostles, or perhaps The Fisher King of Arthurian legends. Anyone who dismisses religion and myth in Mike Scott is asleep or willfully blind. Both the fisherman and the brakeman are old archetypes ("don't the brakeman look good, Momma, flaggin down the double E" (Dylan)), and that may be enough of a reason to use their images here. Also, Joan of Arc described her visions as something like a light in her head. Amazingly powerful song. Didn't know mandolins could be orchestral. |

I think the chorus is "this is all I came to do this is all I came to do, lord, do lord this is all I came to do this is all I came to do, lord, do lord No idea if J's in a spiritual awakening, but he love his "lord" lyric. |

| I keep hearing "lord" in there, too. | |

I think it's "piece it all together pick me up" or "lift me up", rather than "help me out" "keep the past out of my weathered head", rather than withered hand maybe "keep me in awe (of you?)", rather than "keep me at all" finally, I think its "be around" rather than "you'd be around" Sweet song, unbelievable guitar solo at the end. |
