I love how different this song is. Most songs about love or breakups are one-sided. Which is understandable since it's usually coming from personal experience… But I love that this song shows you two views. No one is just "in the wrong". And I think that makes it more real. Because when is something ever black in white in life? I love that it shows the pain from both sides of the relationship. The chorus is really powerful. And I really like the verse after the first chorus. Really great. |

So I really loved this song when I first heard it. I sang it constantly. But. Now that I actually read the words… I'm pretty sure the entire song is about sex. I tried to get around it. I tried to make it fit a general model about a new relationship. But. No. There are just so many literal cues. Like "didn't know what to do with my hands." I tried to think of it like he just wanted to hold her hand but wasn't sure if he should, or he was just so nervous he didn't know what to do with himself…But yea. No. It's sex. And she also said that she "pretends it's impulsive". Girls do that. They pretend they're so spontaneous but really, they have calculated that moment right down to the very last second. I tried to pretend that she was just pretending to be impulsive about liking him or kissing him for the first time, but I'm pretty sure it's sex. And if this line "after everything we did, I know this is the last night, they'll ever think of us as kids" doesn't prove to you that it's about sex, then you are seriously trying to hold on to nerdfighter innocence. I tried to make it seem like they won't be thought of as kids because they're so in love. But that does not make sense. So, again, it's sex. And lastly, as I tried to hold on to my last blissfully ignorant idea, I tried to make the "And I pretend it's not a big deal and you don't make a fuss" to just exemplify the fact that girls are always more invested in a relationship than the typical guy, but that also works for sex. So in conclusion, this song is all about sex. I'm not quite sure why. I mean, it's Luke and Kristina. Why are they writing songs about sex? I mean, I'm not saying I see them as these innocent people on pedestals. I know certain things that they've done they wouldn't support the image they've created. It's just… I thought they would want to continue to support their image, not break it down, bit by bit. Whatever. It's about sex. The end. |

| So far I'm pretty sure everyone has been wrong about what the song means. Normally you can't be wrong, because it's a song, and songs are left to interpretation. But it seems to me that this song pretty much spells out its meaning, and no one's taken the time to listen. It's about a washed up movie star who got caught up in the fame and celebrity lifestyle. Either something happened that ended her career, or it just wasn't her thing, either way, it just didn't work out for her and so "everything she cared about got lost". Now, instead of taking life by the reins and moving on, she's living in the past, trying to find someone to reassure her that she's still worth it, still beautiful. She moves to Hollywood "where upper crust tragedies abound" and starts sleeping with rich, married douchebags because despite the fact that she lost her fame, she's still attractive. She leaves the hotel knowing the whole staff is judging her, and she just feels lost. She's basically a gold digger searching for gold in the wrong place. | |

Okay. Here I go. In the beginning I think Johanna is driving a young man (husband/boyfriend) to Sloan-Kettering for his cancer treatment. She "spies" the ring on His Honor's finger, meaning she knows that he will die and soon the ring will no longer be on his finger because she plans on keeping it. The ring has been in the family for generations so means a lot to her. After he dies, she takes. She pretends to be strong but then the raincoats come, meaning, life overwhelms her. Her sadness overwhelms her. Now there is a flashback to before the young man had cancer. He went to New Mexico and most likely had an affair. I think that Johanna was unaware of the affair. The narrator of the story seems to be some omniscient presence. He knows the full story of what happened. The part where it says "Half of the ring lies here with me But the other half's at the bottom of the sea" makes me that the ring is representative of the young man's life. Half of his story lies at the bottom of the sea because it is lost. Johanna doesn't know, so she goes on with her life, numb, barely feeling much of anything, because her sadness is so great. The other half of the ring (the man's story) lies with the narrator because he knows the full extent of what happened. |

| I think the little girl symbolizes her innocence. So yes, I also think she's leading the girl to the guy that can save her. | |

| I don't know if she's a prostitute. I think that maybe she is just a really beautiful girl who has been dealt a hard hand in life. She tries to find love, but she's looking in the wrong places, constantly ending up heartbroken and miserable. She seems a little self-destructive too. She knows that nothing good can come from what she's doing, but she falls in the same traps over and over again. I think she also sets the traps for others too. She's been hurt, so she hurts others as well. | |
