Regina Spektor – Mermaid Lyrics 14 years ago
is it just me or does this song seem to represent SilentGirl in the book (which has recently been made into a film) who was a mermaid, who made a deal with a witch for some legs in exchange for her voice

she complains that her feet bleed when she walks and that people think she's dumb

i've been a huge fan of this song for ages, i started reading the book today and noticed the correlation
it was published in about 2007 so i was wondering if Regina took inspiration from the book or visa versa, or if it is just mere coincidence

Regina Spektor – Après Moi Lyrics 15 years ago
The whole "be afraid of the..." etc. to me is about sterotyping different people as being those who would readily exploit somebody else and steal from them. I think the whole song is about her being a Russian Jew (who, supposedly would be stereotyped as untrustworthy and bad by those people who cannot accept anything new). Regina is, in my opinion, attempting to cope in a world where different cultues unite, and tries to go on "stan-stan-ding-ding"

i'm probably wrong, but that is what i gather from this song.

I, like many of those above me, think that this song is mainly about trying to cling onto the past, and being afraid that so much has changed since then. The whole aspect of forgetting a song mainly shows how this person (presumably Regina) has found that she has forgotten a metephorical song, which to me seems to depict a lost part of Regina as it can be assumed that songs are simply the pure outcry from her soul, and she is distraught to have lost this without her noticing.

However, the lyrics which seem to stand out to me the most are "He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry, 'Cause it's his turn, but his brother won't let him try". This seems to show how we always seem to want what we cannot have, which is a trait most associated with childhood, and Regina hints that this trait stays with a person their whole life, as so many people try and hold onto what they have lost, and are upset to find that this can no longer happen.

I know that many people probably have their own ideas on this song, but that is my opinion.

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 16 years ago
i think that the song is all about simply enjoying life
to me, the "folding chair" is significant as it is a quite simplistic seat to sit on, which she uses simply to sit back and watch how her life plans out, whilst enjoying it.
the body bit, as many others think so, to me is all about her forgetting that she has a perfect body as she can walk and talk, and everything does it's job- even the tiny jobs such as eyelashes being used to catch sweat. however she often forgets this as her body does not seem perfect compared to others.
the bit about the sea being a wetter version of the sky is a bit confusing. to me it just shows how the sea can be dangerous, as can Earth itself, while the sky seems so beautiful. regina seems to remind us that reality (the sea) is just a more touchable and sensual version of our dreams that always seem beyond our reach. she seems afraid to sit here alone and see all of this happening around her, so invites somebody else to sit with her and enjoy it. the part about the shadows just show how she feels that her real self is sometimes hidden by the seemingly more important and depressing factors of life, and how she wishes that people would see past the shadows and just enjoy life.

sorry i've written so much- i love regina spektor and this is possibly my favorite song :)
