After discovering Chris Cornell's take on the lyrics, is it even possible to speculate their meaning. There is no room for speculation at this point. We know what they mean, straight from the horse's mouth. Furthermore, since Cornell explained the lyrics mean absolutely nothing, how is it we 'all' know about the play on words of Sun for Son (I certainly do not, I take Cornell's explanation at face value and think the word is just what it is, the word sun). By Cornell's explanation it is sun, nothing more, nothing less, no play on any word. |

Since this is from the album With Teeth that released in 2005 after Reznor had been out of the picture for the three prior years, I’m going to say it is about his concerns, fears, insecurities being in the scrutinizing eyes of the public and his profession. That when he was younger and first starting out, he had direction and confidence, everything was in front of him to conquer. Then he hit some walls, stumbled a couple of times, disappeared for times. Now, he was back again, older and feeling uncertain. Feeling like everyone was watching to see if he would succeed or fail and he did not enjoy feeling the pressure from it. |
