The Cat Empire – Sly Lyrics 14 years ago
Question: What does "killa" mean when shouted by Greeks? I tried babelfish, but I think whoever put down the lyrics did so by ear, cuz it wasn't there. Also, it really helps to watch the music video for this if you're trying to understand it. It's not so abstract seeming with the physical story being performed alongside the song. However: "break and enter take ya like a glass of milk" UM...WHA? I don't really get that part.

Could you go into more detail about the "dirt of noise"? I've never heard that phrase, and although it seems intuitive, I'd like to know more about what you mean. Everything would be overwhelming if you suddenly tried to understand it all at once, but where do dirt and noise come in?

Born Ruffians – Blood, The Sun, & Water Lyrics 14 years ago
Blood, the Sun, & Water = red, yellow, and blue = album title. Funny that I didn't notice that until reading the lyrics. This song, like most Born Ruffians songs, seems ripe with meaning. I wonder, who is Antoine? Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe they just like that name, and they needed a random earth-citizen to be getting dizzy thinking about his planet. I think Antoine is nauseous because he is alone with his thoughts, and is thinking too hard about the complexities of existence. THAT might be reading into it a little too much though, you tell me.
I love the next line (and I know, this is only the FIRST stanza!) "my world, it's the best in all of the world/but i wonder, is it true to me?" I THINk, the idea there is that although we create a world around us that we think others will appreciate and find interesting, awesome, or whatever, it may not be totally true to ourselves. That too, might be me being stupidly deep. Also, the happy- light hearted "oombiadia oombiadia" that comes next kind of discredits my theory, as the narrator doesn't seem all that concerned, and beings detailing a solid little manifesto. He is very sure of himself, and so seems to know that his world IS in fact true to him.
They next go back into the insanity of the universe' broadness: "minds can't even comprehend," etc. The next bit I need help with though. Maybe the "oombiadia" parts are a thinking sound, I'm not sure. Also, the last stanza I have trouble not taking very literally. Maybe it is super straightforward. Details of how it is all made: "blood + sun = you/ flesh and nails, hammers too" that's the ingredients, tools, and results. Like I said, of that I'm unsure, but I super love this song, and I hope someone else comments a mini essay like this to tell me what I've missed :)

Born Ruffians – Red Elephant Lyrics 14 years ago
The penis innuendo hit me very suddenly one day. But I felt like maybe I was just being gross, so I decided to check songmeanings. Either you're all gross too, or this song is definitely very, very phallic :P

It's almost from the penis' point of view, when you think about it. At the beginning, the penis wants to do what it does, but the peach fish is playing hard to get. It is worth it, so the penis thinks, "okay, well let's take it slow I guess...". But it can't stop thinking about her: "how am I supposed to wash you off?" Later it almost sarcastically says "walking in unison, so cute" before mentioning how frustrated it is: "red elephant is turning blue." Not happy.

So now the penis is trying to impress the peach fish: "who am i supposed to be with you? I'll wait till you say and pretend I knew." The next little bit is more of the waiting game. Poor penis. The man's whole life-rhythm is thrown off, he can't think or write, things aren't right, and then!

Sweet relief. Red elephant meets peach fish in a delightful and (as dumbledore222 so astutely described it) childish romp, ending with bliss for everyone.

Born Ruffians – Hummingbird Lyrics 14 years ago
I think I might be taking the whole song way too literally. Has anyone formulated an explanation for the first two stanzas? I suppose the first one could be talking about under-appreciating life...but then maybe there is a relation to the phrase "pushing up daisies" which is death, and makes sense too. Then the second stanza I'm just clueless about. The "I need supplies before I arrive" is obviously relevant with all of its repetition, but I don't get that either. The last thing I don't understand is the line "he's running down my thigh." How literal is that? On the rest I've drawn my own loose conclusions, but if anyone has an opinion on all of that, I'd love to hear it :)

Also, this band is absolutely more bad ass than Vampire Weekend. Bare and awesome.
