Also, "The earth grew green, and nursed itself to what she used to be. All our senseless shouting calmed to quiet in her ancient memory..." Is a statement that, without humans, the earth can truly flourish, we are the cancer of the world perhaps. I dunno, that is just my opinion. |

This song to me, is an metaphor for the world's health. "This is the window where, I watched the future start..." That is saying he is seeing where we are going with our modern day.... "My pupils dilated, and shocks ran up my arms..." I believe to be a rough idea of maybe a modern medicine. "I felt the city choke, I heard the world at war..." I feel the choke reference refers to starvation and poverty, while the war part is self explanatory. Near the end of the song, where this line reads, "I saw my lover chased, through feilds of sugar cane. She clucthed her belly close, she whispered keep us safe. They ground her down to dust, No more miracles today..." That to me is the best line in the song, It represents that bringing new life and love into the world, isn't a miracle. Not with the world in such turmoil and agony as it is. As much as you try to "Keep them Safe" you never truly can. Over all this song is very political and amazing. |

Its turn our hate into factories... Listen to the Kevin Devine, a good friend of the bands, version. Its a lot easier to understand that part. |

To me this song...is a battle of his religious beliefs. That he is damned to hell for all the sins he's committed in his life. He seeks hope, and compares himself to Jesus. Though he falls short when it comes to everything. The lines that read, "Does Thomas ask to see my hand?" Meaning that he has all the marks for his sins, and that Thomas can see through him. My personal favorite line from this song, is, "We all got wood and nails, and turn our hate into factories." TO me that signifies that we are all capable of being prosecuted, but we are also capable of killing... Where I stand with that statement, is that he refers turning our hate into factories, which in my opinion means weaponry for warfare. We use our hate to fuel way to much in this life. Instead of trying to help those in need? I don't thats what I get from this song. P.S. Brand New is an amazing band, I am in love with them....so if you haven't really listened to them, go do it now. |
