| Suzanne Vega – Marlene On The Wall Lyrics

In my view it's about a women who has slept with so many men who have hurt her that she has lost all energy to care or love anymore. The picture of Marlene has been there when she's been with all of these men who are the soldiers, but now as she no longer involves herself with men she is the only person or soldier Marlene sees as there's no more men. 'even if i am in love with you' i view as her having feelings for a new man but not wanting to go down the track of being hurt yet again. 'reminded me of the night we kissed' refers to when she let her feelings get the better of her for this new man but she is still not prepared to go any further. |

I view it as a very insecure and lonely woman maybe even one who has gone through a bit of trauma or struggling to get over something from the past such as divorce. When she has her coffee it's like there is all this talk, action and people around her but she still can't connect to it or is to scared to involve herself in it. When she sees the women hitching up her skirt she can't believe how someone is the complete opposite to her in relation to confidence. Picking up the paper and looking for the funnies is one way she attempts to brighten up her insecure life. Not knowing the actor who had died is an example of how out of touch she is with the world. |

| The Go-Betweens – Streets Of Your Town Lyrics

I have to disagree with everyone so far. I view it as a negative song. The streets of your town refer to where his lover lives. 'The rain is on it's way' is a euphamism as rain symbolises gloominess. 'Watch the butcher shine his knives and this town is full of battered wives' refers to the roughness and violence of the area. 'They shut it down, they closed it down' I view as a reference to the fact the area had nothing going for it so whatever was still operating there the people in power terminated. He goes everyday to the streets of your town to see his lover but everytime he does he is touched as it is so different to the normal lifestyle he is used to. If it was a reference to Brisbane then it would be the streets of my town not your town and it wouldn't be unusual for him to walk through it every day if it was in reference to where he lived. |
