As a European I can tell you exactly what the opinion is, and what he supposedly means. Americans always stick out like sore thumbs as travellers in Europe. I think its more down to personal interaction and image than commercialisation and consumer imperialism "what ever needs to be said is said in english" - Would you as an American attempt the local language when approaching someone in a foreign country for help? How would you feel if someone speaks to you in German or French in America? You'll think what an idiot, you're in America? I would speak English when in America or the UK and would expect the same for ppl in my country Americans rarely attempt to experience the local culture and would rather head to the nearest Macdonald's or KFC which makes them seem uncultured. |
