Lady GaGa – Scheiße Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the Scheisse she's talking about is the way that women are constantly analyzed and judged in the music and entertainment industry.

In Ani DiFranco's Little Plastic Castle, she makes a similar observation, "People talk about my image/like I come in two dimensions/like lipstick is a sign of my declining mind/like what I happen to be wearing/the day that someone takes a picture/is my new statement for all of womankind ... quick, someone call the girl police/and file a report!"

Women are constantly judged and assessed and their every angle psychoanalyzed, Gaga in particular. She just wants to have fun without having to always be selling a message. She wants to be free to be a woman without being interrogated and attacked for her sex.

Lady GaGa – Hair Lyrics 14 years ago
I am so mixed about this song. It's quite possibly my favorite musically on the album - I love the catchy, upbeat rhythm, and the obvious throwback/homage to Bruce Springsteen (particularly Thunder Road, with it's light but complex piano). But the lyrics are just... absolutely stupid. I'm embarrassed to sing along with it because it just devolves into screaming the word "hair" a million times. Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham after his editor bet him $50 he couldn't write a book using just 50 words. I feel like someone made a similar bet with Gaga challenging her to write a song that uses the word "hair" 50+ times.

"I'm not defending Vanilla Ice because he sucks, but I'll defend Florence because I like her" IS "I don't mind plagiarism if I like the artist, but it's wrong if I don't."

There is not a finite amount of care in the world. Caring about plagiarism doesn't "use up" your ability to care about other things.

This is like... Failing At Debate 101.

Katy Perry – Firework Lyrics 15 years ago
So because you don't think she's hot and you don't care for her voice, everyone who likes her is stupid and you're going to kill them?

What are you? 13?

Go back to your room and play with your Pokemon cards while Hybrid Theory annoys your parents, son. One day you'll be old enough to play World of Warcraft like the rest of the neckbeards.

She said she was broke. She didn't say he was.

He obviously has money, because she talks about him cashing out (his casino chips) and getting cash out. Your inability to listen and read doesn't make a song bad.

Florence + the Machine – Between Two Lungs Lyrics 15 years ago
"If you don't like it, don't listen to it?"

Really? So stealing is okay if someone likes what you took? That's ridiculous. Again, I like her and bought her CD. I paid money to her only to find out that she'd stolen from artists who did not get paid and are not getting paid for the works of theirs she uses. I am entitled to be unhappy that I was made party to theft because her agents can't get their act together and she can't learn to sample legitimately.

Queen wasn't happy when Vanilla Ice stole from them. Would you have been defending him, too? Or is theft only okay when you like them? I've been very polite about this issue, but this staning and ignoring reality is pretty sad.

"Sound similar? Gang Gang Dance sure think so. So much so, in fact, that they pursued Florence's team to give them a share of the song's publishing royalties-- and Florence agreed, saying it was a mistake not to have credited them in the first place."

There you have it. Florence admitted to lifting entire lines and notes from other songs and claims she (and her legal team) somehow ~forgot~ to credit the original creators. Continuing to insist otherwise just means you're calling your idol a liar. What is the point? Encourage her to own up and pay the remaining royalties and properly acknowledge (in linear notes in future printings of her albums) the people who ~inspired~ her enough to take their work. Then everyone can enjoy Florence with a clear conscious and a good mind.

I like Florence + the Machine's sound and lyrics a great deal, but I'm not going to let my fanning of her blind me to the things she's doing that are wrong. I want to love her, but I can't, because she's so shameless in her infringement.

There's a huge difference between "sounds similar" (the music in Katey Perry's "Fireworks" sounds similar to the music in Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," for example and Duffy's "Mercy" sounds like an homage to The Ronnette's "Be My Baby") and lifting the whole, entire music from one song.

Florence has done this before. "Kiss With a Fist" is the White Stripes "We're Going to be Friends" and "Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)" lifts straight out of Gang Gang Dance's "House Jam" (including lifting lyrics) and they actually successfully sued her for that.

If you're going to market yourself as "the next Patrick Wolf," it might do to compose your own music instead of just stealing his.

More than a bit. I want to adore this woman, but all of her songs are just cut and pastes of other songs with no credit and that troubles me.

Queen – Hammer To Fall Lyrics 15 years ago
The way these lines are sung always gives me chills because I find it so perfect: "For we who grew up tall and proud/In the shadow of the mushroom cloud." Flawless song.

They actually went at her for plagiarism and she settled with them to give them a portion of the royalties.

I can't believe how heavily this song utilizes/lifts from the melody from Patrick Wolf's "Let's Go (Get Lost)". It kind of kills the song for me, to be honest.

Vienna Teng – Augustine Lyrics 16 years ago
Before she sang this at a Nashville concert, Vienna said, "This is for the religious experience I haven't had yet." I was so happy to hear that description of this song, because it so perfectly captures this song for me. It is about faith, and the desperate desire to be faithful, to be loved in the arms of the one you find most holy. It is the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and it stirs such a deep desire in me for grace.
