This song could almost be called "EcHeathazeiastes," for its worldview: "I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind." -- Ecclesiastes 1:14 |

Per Matthew 5:14, I do wonder if the "light of the world" sung about here is the Church and not Christ Himself. Because the third line, "And are we illuminating," brings the singer into the picture. The song seems to be looking for the missing Church and not its Head when framed that way at the outset, especially in light of the line, "As we deny that love is still the king not as weak as we make him out to be."
I believe this song to be a challenge issued to and a questioning of the writer, the listener, and the Church, not Jesus. |

I concur, sylvie. The phrase, "You're beautiful my love" is repeated as it is in the Song of Solomon, chapter 4. Ed Roland has a strong church background, so it is little surprise. I got into Collective Soul because of their rock tunes, but I think their ballads are stronger. Amazing love song. |

Exactly. Having been an overnight worker for a supermarket, it's exactly how it feels. Anyone that's worked that kind of schedule can relate. To me, the "headache grey" was the feeling I got near the end of my shift until my head safely hit my pillow at 8 AM. |

Nice. Thanks for sharing. :) I can see the commonality between the verse and the faith walk. The Christian faith is a journey, so keep walking unafraid.
The figure of the "little lamb" in the first verse came back to me when I listened to Neon Horse's lyrics on their two albums. Namely, the "little lamb so far away from home." |

This is the best song the group Adam Again never wrote but could have. I swear Tom & co. caught the spirit of Gene Eugene for this one. I love it.
As for the meaning, I think the title sums it up nicely. |

I agree with the above comments. All good points. There aren't enough good "sobering" songs (to quote quickmansucks1) out there. This song is so cold and haunting, like the subject matter. |
