Thanks for that explanation - the song is so brillianty written: "window frames hold pictures of you." My granddad died recently - but he wasn't alzheimic, thank god - and that song makes perfect sense. |

| "She was popular and pretty...but she was followed by the light" maybe this is about mental illness - despite her seemingly comfortable social life, she still suffers from bouts of depression and suchlike. | |

Her use of the phrase "you'll turn out like him and I'll turn out like her," is interesting, as it is typically used to express a fear of becoming like one's parents. Perhaps years ago, (maybe when they were in their teens), Angus and Julia had some sibling rivalry, and as part of that they were competitive, each tryig to make their own relationships look stronger. "He/Him" is her boyfriend "as he stood by the bed" and "you" as in "you win" is her brother. And then there's the fear that they'll turn out like their parents, so they patch things up and get over it? Or maybe it describes rivalry with another relative or best friend, and "you'll tun out like him and I'll turn out like her" refers to two other people that they both knew? |

I like your interpretation, as most people immediately assume that the song is directed at the mother as the neglected child, with a line about the grandmother as the under-appreciated wife. But I disagree with the meaning you took from the line "the century before you never could turn 21" I think this could refer to the prohibition, as in some states of america, the drinking age is 21. |

yes and her anorexia is the mess that he don't wanna clean up. There are other lines that refrence her illness; her hands could be "shaky" from anger at the guy, crying, and starvation. Also "I dont feel...justified," or some version of that is a pretty classic thing to hear from people suffering from anorexia. I think this song is about her illness as much as unrequited love. |

It's obvious that this is about a struggling or broken relationship. But whether it's simply a break-up song, a song about a romance that was more important to her or an on/off thing? Probably on/off because of "seems destined means how long you'll play unfair?" i.e. she wants to believe that it will work, but it's taking too long. Also "creeping home" suggests they're ashamed of her. I don't know, but as it's one of my favourite songs (albeit very obtuse), I sure hope someone else does! |

I agree that its definitely about a childhood friend, and it does imply romantic feelings for that friend. There's also a slightly melancholy tone, and the wiry "Looks like" suggests he speaks of an old romance, or someone who rejected him, or simply never noticed his feelings. There's no bitterness, but maybe there is a hint of sadness? |
