| Wilco – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Lyrics

i don't know how many of you have dealt with addiction or alcoholism before but this seems like the perfect "sane moment" song from someone who is an alcoholic. this guy has a problem and loves this woman. it hurts when she's away. but he can't have her either. you can't have an addiction and be there for someone. so it seems like one of those sort of apology songs in a way. like, hey, i realize i'm a total idiot and i love you but we both know i'm going to just break your heart. |

| The Cranberries – Empty Lyrics

this is pretty much a poster song for borderline personality disorder. whether it was intended to be or not. chronic emptiness is actually one of the criteria of diagnosis. especially the line of has my identity been taken- the main symptom of bpd is lack of an identity or extremely poor self-image. the lyrics could mean a million different things, and since everyone has mentioned most of the others, i figured i'd contribute this one. |

| The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics

someone said in one of these posts that a lot of the strokes' lyrics are pretty basic, which is completely true. what's great about basic lyrics is there can be a very obvious meaning and/or things can be interpreted a million different ways. i like to look at it from the perspective that this song is singular, as in one person singing about their self and their experiences, and the "you" and "i" reflects different aspects of that person. i'm sure most people know what it's like to have an internal battle going on, and this song seems to be portraying one of those battles where someone just goes "why the fuck did i let that happen?" someone that's very fragile and chaotic would have the opposing forces of making something harder for yourself and letting yourself down. i've done a lot of stupid things that i really regret and the opening lines say it all: "i want to be forgotten and i don't want to be reminded." |

| Andrew Bird – A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left Lyrics

andrew bird has said that his song "tea and thorazine" is in reference to his autistic brother and his experiences in mental institutions. to me, this really is about someone with a psychological problem- and that's addicts as well- grappling with existence. i believe most people ask themselves "why are we alive?," but the references to substance abuse- paper napsack, laid out on the bathmat, overprescribed, over imbibed- these all point out an attempt to mask or "cure" pain. i've always thought of this as an uplifting song, as so much of it is about the things a person with a mental illness would do- can't stand to look back, nervous tic motion, substance abuse- i mean, it all feels like running away and masking life. but the end is "you're what happens when two substances collide, and by all accounts you really should have died." that, to me, is about all of the possible times you could have died versus the chances of you surviving, and you survived all that. you and your existence are a miracle. being a person that's been in a few mental institutions, that's a pretty powerful statement to me. so much of anxiety and depression revolves around one's existence, so this is like a big thumbs up. you're alive, and you're you. that's amazing. |
