The Postal Service – Sleeping In Lyrics 16 years ago
The Giver wasn't about the world being perfect. It was about society changing themselves to what they felt was best, when really it just made everyone stay emotionless, which, if you think about it, doesn't really unleash you to your brain's full capacity. Which doesn't really lead you to anywhere in particular... which is the opposite of a perfect society; The point is progression.
I like to think Postal Service kinda talks about that a lot...

And as far as books about perfect societies go, maybe you should read the Uglies trilogy- there's actually a "trailer" of Uglies with a postal service song on Youtube. "This place is a prison" I believe. Go figure? xP

Exactly. And the thing about trying to get a drink- suppose he means he's trying to numb out all the pain and worry and insecurity in this place that he's in, in the end? Because it's just too much to handle, and he goes back with going along with everything else.

It's funny, cause, even though he's given up, the whole thing still hurts him on the inside, so much in fact that he has to numb it out.

But isn't temporary happiness also what drugs are like, at best? And you're always left wanting more, but you're, as you said, never satisfied or content. Sadly enough, it happens to work both ways.
