Joe Pug – Hymn #101 Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song...my interpretation is nowhere near yours however...which is if funny to me because...that's what music/lyric is....touches everyone's heart differently. I don't see it as his singing about a love interest at all....I think he's describing his own life and what is important to him in his heart.

I think the first part about shipwrecks and "I've come to wish aloud among the overdressed crowd. Come to witness now the sinking of the ship. Throwing pennies from the seatop next to it." Is about his attending his father's funeral/burial. People dressed up, sinking of the ship, throwing pennies from the seatop......I see that as all attending his father's burial...his casket going down and throwing pennies from the seatop I see as placing flowers atop the casket as it goes into the ground.

I think this part: "I say the more I buy the more I'm bought. And the more I'm bought the less I cost." is my favorite line....because it is SOOOOOOOOO TRUE!

Then I think the ending (and mind you, I'm not a hugely religious advocate or anything, but it touched me as follows): I think he's referencing Jesus or at least New Testament Biblical references because of the following:
"I've come to ask them for a lot (like Lottery--there was a lottery for Jesus' clothing); I've come to ransack and spill (when Jesus went into the church and overturns the merchants tables); manger that you sleep in ; stranger that you keep; before we met I knew we'd meet; insist I leave with a kiss (Jesus identified to his captures by being sigled out with a kiss); I mean so many things; treasure in my chest (where your heart lies, there your treasure lies also).

Anyhow...just thoughts.....
