I think you guys all have it wrong. This song is about organized religion. Also, some of the lyrics on this page are incorrect. I know my interpretation is probably a little offensive to some, but there is no need to attack me. This is just my own personal interpretation of a song. I'm not telling anybody what to believe or condemning anybody's religion. "Deny the chance to think for yourself You inherit lies, your time has all been wasted" I take this to indicate, you are told to believe from the time you are a young child. You are never given the choice to decided for yourself. Most people believe their religion simply because it is how they were raised. "Follow tradition to quench your thirst" Tradition could mean any religious tradition like church, etc. Quenching your thirst for answers, or a reason for life. "And swallow vomit from ancestors" This could mean scripture or the bible possibly, the ancestors write a lot of ugly passages in the bible, their followers simply swallow them. "So shun the queer and praise the skies" You simply reject anything that goes against what you believe, and praise the sky is a very obvious reference to god or heaven. "So take these words for what they are (Lights out! Lights out!) That's what you say, what you say" The chorus seems to be saying, just take these words as truth, lights out indicates no thought process, just blind belief. The song goes on to say: "Embrace your leaders Stand in line Feast on their words Refuse to learn And choke on dead traditions" Once you see the religious references in the chorus and opening verses, you can see how people just embrace their religious leaders, eat up their words and refuse to think outside the box, or evolve their thinking in any way, following ancient traditions. "You're already dead!" Could mean, you are not living life. You are already dead. |

First off, this site is for discussing the meaning of songs, not for telling people how they should live their own lives! This song is about our failure to evolve by clinging to hate and judgment, therefore failing the human race by condemning one another based on their life choices. "you're narrow-minded, quick to judge with bible belt tunnel vision" Hey stevewode... I think this lyric was written especially for people like you. Comparing sexual orientation to murder? I think you have proven to everyone on this board how ignorant you are. You are a pathetic human being, and should be ashamed of yourself. Those of you on this board who are bashing homosexuals, look within yourself and figure out why you are so hateful. Do not use religion or god to justify your own hatred and ignorance. The bible also says that women cannot be teachers, it condones slavery and rape, as well as human and animal sacrifice. It is simply ancient scripture that is out dated and should not be taken literally by anyone. Also, most Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, who banished the old testament to start a new coven. He represents a message of love and acceptance to his followers. Maybe you should know a little something about your own religion before you go off preaching hate. "This is ignorance failure to evolve is failure to us all when will you learn that this is where we fall" Story of the Year has it completely right. This is failure to evolve. Hatred and discrimination derives from ignorance. This is why genocide, wars, and hate crimes are a reality in this world. Wake up people! A great man once said, "Love is all you need." Nobody is perfect, we are all human, we are all equal. Until we can accept each other, this world will always be at war and we will never have peace...in the end we only have ourselves to blame for the ugly place this world can be. |
