@karmakgb I was just trying to decide that and had the same except Petrucci and Myung the other way round. Second verse just reminded me of Learning To Live. And Petrucci for the last verse by default, though it does feel a bit like his Lines In The Sand type lyrics. I think your way could be right though. This is an amazing song, agreed that it's always listenable and very uplifting. |

Once you know it's about a girl who was saved from drowning by another man, the song kind of makes sense. However, I don't think anyone is 100% sure of the specifics of it - I know I'm not. A thought I had though: The man saves the girl from drowning, giving up his own life for her to have his. However, she can't live with the guilt so she "turns her back" on life. I'm not sure whether she actually does kill herself or not, but either way she doesn't really live her life that he died to give her. He sees the way she is living (or not living), so he chooses to "take her soul". However, by doing this he is basically killing her / forcing her to commit suicide. Because of this, he has to give up his place in "paradise" so that she can come there, mirroring the way he gave up his life so that she can live. This is why he says "don't turn your back on paradise". Alternatively, the girl did kill herself. As you know Catholics say that suicide is an unforgiveable sin, so she wouldn't be able to get into heaven or paradise. However, the man then takes the punishment for her in a way, giving up his place in paradise for her. This seems likely - she was drowning so he dived into save her, drowning in the process but giving her the chance to live. Then, she commits suicide so is stuck in purgatory / going to hell / not going to paradise. He saves her, taking her place and giving her the chance to go to paradise. |

I know that this song is probably about the Iraq war since that's the current one (and it will definitely be taken that way since everyone thinks just about every song has something to do with the Iraq war). Personally I don't think it really matters which war is about, it's just the story of someone who goes to a war. Songs are better when they are more general, and there's no reason it has to be about Iraq instead of any other war. That being said, I wouldnt really have got Iraq from the lyrics - Vietnam is the war that came into my head. It's the war I've most commonly heard associated with the phrase "M.I.A.", as there were a lot of soldiers who were never confirmed dead there, making there a lot of MIAs. It's a recent war so fresh in people's memory, but not so recent as to make a song about it "political". It was renowned for having a lot of very young soldiers fight in it, and for it to be difficult for some returning veterans to re-enter society (which is clearly the story of the soldier in the song). And it was a lot more bloody a war than the Iraq one. Somehow the "shot a mother right in front of her son" makes me doubt it's specifically about Iraq too. I'm sure stuff like that has happened in the Iraq war, but in Iraq the Americans were first trying to overthrow Sadaam, then to merely deal with the terrorists and ensure the safety of the civillians from what are basically terrorists. That line just gives connotations of a different kind of war to me, more like Vietnam. But again, I think it's just about war in general, and doesn't have to be about a specific conflict. Vietnam is just the one I thought / think of when listening. |

I noticed the seven deadly sins too, but I knew it mentioned some but not all of them> Now seeing them listed, I notice the only one missing is, ironically, gluttony... of which alchoholism is a form of. Perhaps it's not mentioned because the entire suite is about fighting it, not just this song. But anyway, this is an amazing song. Possibly my favourite lyrics in the Twelve Step Suite, and in general. |
