I probably got these lyrics from the same place you did, but I went over them a few times, listening to the song as I did so, and I believe they are correct. If there are any mistakes, just let me know. This is probably my favorite part: "I couldn't wait to finally pick my family up Everything is quiet and covered in snow There's somethin' wrong here... Nobody's at home Oh, no, nono, nono, nono, no I'm back in the driver's seat Headin' back home Yeah, back to Texas But on my own" Aside from, of course: "I might been gone, but I never walked out" My biological father could never say that, of course, since he was only in my life the week I was born, but I had a great Dad for the first ten years of my life [he passed away- leukemia], and my mom's always been there for me- my point: I love the sentiment of the lyric. I'm tired, twisted, barely breathing, buried in the dark But don't be concerned, it's just the power of a breaking heart How good am I hiding it? Look, I've got some bad intentions Guilty as fucking charged Still standing stable, more than able 'cause I know who you are I know the birthdays, anniversaries, all the first days I missed I regret them all, but But now I know this: I know that God exists I held her in my arms I never knew I was able To ever feel this strong Take me off your worry list, it'll be better that way I'm really fine and there's nothing we haven't talked about So, take me off your worry list I said, "Throw it away!" Yeah, this is what my life is about I might have been gone, but I never walked out I've taken a thousand red eyes To change your point of view What kind of man would take the trust you break and still follow through? 'Cause I'm standin' right here And you may not show up This same gate 14 where, honestly, I'm just sick of calling your bluff And it's just embarrassing, that I nearly threw up While I'm trying hard to change the things I always screw up And at the top of my list, this visitation's no relationship But I gotta make the best of it 'Cause I know - I know that God exists I held her in my arms I never knew I was able To ever feel this strong Take me off your worry list, it'll be better that way. And I'm doin' fine and I've got plenty of friends around. Take me off your worry list, just throw it away Well, it's time to stand up on my own for her 'Cause I'm packing it up, and I'm comin' today I couldn't wait to finally pick my family up Everything is quiet and covered in snow There's somethin' wrong here... Nobody's at home Oh, no, nono, nono, nono, no I'm back in the driver's seat Headin' back home Yeah, back to Texas But on my own Take me off your worry list, it'll be better that way And I'm doin' fine and I've got plenty of friends around Take me off your worry list, just throw it away Yeah, it's time to stand up on my own for her I'm packing it up, and I'm comin' today This is what my story's about I might have been gone, but I never walked out And I'm packin' it up, and I'm comin' today This is what your story's about My pretty little girl, can you figure it out? If it helps to know so there is no doubt, Just listen to the stories Not everything is glorious Some hurt, some love, some shout I fought the world and I lost that bout And you are what my album's about I might have been gone, but I never walked out |

I'm pretty sure she says "Take me away: a hiding place" Not 'a higher place' |

| Not commenting on the possible drug references, but I agree with how she actually says 'a hiding place', and not 'a higher place' | |

'writing on a cup of coffee' I think it's actually 'riding on a cup of coffee' As in that's what's keeping her, the waitress, going at the moment, especially with the 'smiles when able from the inside' Waitresses have a tiring and much of the time hectic job. That's my two cents anyway. |

Look up Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin' (1969) on youtube. My mom just pointed out that the beginning of Nilsson's song sounds pretty much exactly like the melody in Oakenfold's jam. I thought it was pretty durn cool. Cuz it does. And yeah. Love the song. And the commercial. =) |

And you're playing out your game again Why are you never on my side? And you're telling me I should forget you Come on, the guy's a fake What do you love him for? And it was my mistake, Just kicking in his door And if it's just a game Then what are we crying for? |

*Forgot to add this* So they're not 'selling out.' He didn't write this to be popular, to make more money. Again, this song is for Blue. He wrote it ~for her.~ Not for any other reason. Mainstream can't touch this. Sure, I'd be glad for them if it hit the radio, but I'd be pleased all the same if it doesn't. Because they're not pop. They're better than that. They're Blue October. |

For those of you mentioning that the song is/might be for his daughter, you are absolutely correct. In an interview where he went over each song in the new album, he said that this song was solely for his daughter, and if you don't like it, then too bad. He pretty much said that. Because it's for Blue [his baby girl, for those who don't know- Blue Reed Furstenfeld]. He wants the world for her, but he also wants to let her know about how tough life can be, but not to let it get her down. And I agree with Everlastingfriend. This is one of my favorite songs from AN. It really flows with my mindset, and you can really tell how much this girl, his daughter, this shining star, has lit up and changed his life. All of you talking about how different this song is from their usual stuff, or how happy it is- doesn't that tell you something? The contrast alone should tell you all you need to know about how his life has changed, therefore his songwriting and mood. Preferring their previous works is fine. Absolutely. Just because a band, even your favorite band, comes out with a new album, doesn't mean you have to listen to it, or that you'll like it. You listen to what you feel like listening to. I could write a book on it, really. But seriously, Blue October is my absolute favorite band, and I haven't found a song by them that I don't like, or even have anything negative to say about. There are songs I like listening to more than others, of course, but it all depends on my mood, as it does for most people. That's my two cents, anyway. =) |

| Srsly? That's a nickname, right? What's his full first name? | |

| The first two lines are excellent, tho! Using 'call' in two senses- to me, it makes a pretty good beginning, and sums up the whole song, pretty much. To each their own, I guess. So how come you don't like it, tho? I'd really, honestly like to know. | |

I agree with the 'dilly' and 'maybe' part After listening to that part a few times, it does sound like 'This is what I get/gain/give for foo' or something, but I think 'This is more like April fools' is correct. She only really says 'foo' tho. Like Mr. T. But not on purpose. =P That's my three cents, anyway. |

Ok, so a lot of people are talking about the record label, and about how they were dropped, and whatnot- the label screwing them over, etc. I don't have any clear facts on it, but here are some facts I've gathered related to this song: - When talking about this song in an interview for Approaching Normal, he says, 'MR does NOT stand for Motown Records. I can't tell you what it stands for, but it's not that.' - It is possible that he could be referring to the label in this, due to the label dropping them. They didn't have a very tight connection with them from what the public could see; quite a few differences and disagreements. Houstonpress.com has this( and more): "We got dropped," the 26 year-old Furstenfeld says matter-of-factly. "I laugh about it. We put our album out, worked our asses off on it. I don't think Universal knew what we were all about." To be fair to Universal, what do you do with a band like Blue October? It's hard to find the right fit in today's corporate radio wasteland for a rock-based band with lyrics that redefine angst and a violin as the lead instrument. Universal thought the solution was to dumb it down. "Universal decided to put 'Breakfast After Ten' out as a single, and I was like, 'What? That's like the worst song I've ever written,' " recounts Furstenfeld. "They said, 'Everyone loves it.' I said, 'Why, dude? I hate singing it.' Every night I'm making the set list and our road manager comes up to me and says, 'You have "Breakfast After Ten" on there, right?' I would say no. He says, 'You better put it on there.' Arrrrgh! What's the point of doing art if you can't do it the way you want to do it?" Universal also wanted the band to tone down the drama and length of its concerts. Then of course there was the problem of the band's inimitability. "They said, 'You're a Texas band. You can't have a violin in a Texas band.' " Furstenfeld literally snarls his response: "Then why'd you fucking sign me? That's our lead instrument!" Blue October is my absolute favorite band, no doubt. |
