I can't help but think that the lines about bending the truth and tricking the past again refers to, from the movie and moreover the graphic novels, Scott and the way he views his relationship with Envy. Scott doesn't realize, not until later (i'm borrowing this heavily from the graphic novels btw), that in the past he was kinda of a dick. He also doesn't embrace the dark side of him, in the form of Negascott, which represents his past mistakes and the way he treated people, until the end of the book. It makes sense that Envy would be singing such a song after taking this into account. That's just my opinion however. |

Actually, Lightbody wrote this song after he cheated on his girlfriend, so its really about that and the mistakes he's made. He is reflecting upon the experience and he regrets the decision he made. In a way, he's apologizing to her, while at the same time accepting full responsibility for his actions. He wants to start new, but that will always hang over his head. That's what the song is about. |

i like how nobody really looks at the last few stanzas when the tempo speeds up and the lyrics change. obviously he's had enough of all the bullshit and says, essentially, screw this crap, i don't have the time or patience to put up with you, its not worth it. |

God damn i love that book, it connects directly to the underlying meaning behind the song. Just like this song, The Catcher in the Rye has a very deep underlying meaning behind it that most people just do not see. I absolutely love the connection you made between this song and that book. The loss of innocence is very hard to deal with as a child and our parents try to keep this from happening, but eventually it has to happen. I have had to deal with depression since i was in 6th grade, i've definitely lost my innocence, but losing my innocence has helped shape me into the person i am today. Losing your innocence helps you come to terms with what the world is really like on the inside, but as children our parents try so hard to not let it happen, and in a way they're blinding us so we can't see how the world really is. So if we lose our innocence too late in life we find it hard to come to terms with the world and our own feelings. So your heart gets "torn up" because of this and "filled up with nothing." It's better to be able to see the world as it really is so we can come to terms with it and ourselves, if that makes any sense at all. |

You're right about the underlying metaphoric meaning of this song. Most people do want to just "close their eyes" to the problems around them in our world today and just forget about them. But this kind of attitude is exactly what made the problems we have in our world today so bad, people just ignored them and they got exponentially worse as time went on. Arcade Fire is urging us to open our eyes, to face our world's problems head on with no fear, and say "I've had enough of this shit, it's gotta stop NOW." They're urging us to actually do something about it and fight back against just giving in and becoming blind like society wants us to. The song is telling us to "rebel" against being told to ignore our world's problems, it's telling us to "rebel" against the (Lies) we're being told by the established power. In a way, it is also kind of like what indie music did, in that they "rebelled" against the "evils" (if you will) of mainstream music. This song definitely has a deeper meaning than most people suggest in their interpretation of this song. |
