Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 11 years ago
I think some of you got it twisted. This song is pretty clearly the classic "that dick's so good I can't quit it!" Or the other classic "love me so good makes me write bad checks". The comparisons to church are because the union is an ecstatic experience. Taoists know what I mean. And even as your lover cuts your soul to pieces you still worship desperately at their feet. You are at once a penitent and a slave to sensation. If you've ever been rocked so seriously that a choir of angels sang, then you know how fierce those relationships are. Not just sex, but a transcendent spiritual experience. But even as those relationships are sublime they can also be all consuming and, unfortunately for most of us mere mortals, unsustainable. Also I feel this particular song can refer to any type of gendered relationship. I feel the singer is a man speaking of a woman but the lyrics are pretty gender fluid. Anyone seeing explicit homosexual meaning is probably "protesting too much" if you know what I mean.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics 16 years ago
I know no one thinks this song is really deep but if you listen to the lyrics it's really about illegal immigrants getting discriminated against. I know Brittain has a huge illegal immigrant problem and, like the US, they look down and take advantage of the people who work the most menial yet necessary jobs. The jobs most citizens won't take. It reminds me of the coyotes and gangs that prey on the immigrant populations of Calif, Miami and all the big American cities. Almost all the lyrics fit the perspective of a hustler promising green cards and work papers, getting workers addicted to drugs so as to better control them, and doing it all for the money cause immigrants are just disposable currency to them.
I've liked M.I.A since way back in the Arular days and there always seem to be some type of politically conscious lyrics in even her silliest songs. Love that girl!

Sheryl Crow – Riverwide Lyrics 16 years ago
This is the ONLY sheryl crow song I like. It's genius. But I have to totally disagree with the other reviewers (other than moehead). It always struck me as a very literal song. Even the whale bit. To me it is the speaker knowing what the "good" choices in life are. What people expect her/him to do. eg-immersing yourself in religion (I'm pretty sure the whale bit is a story in the bible), or marrying the "right" man, but having the strengths to chose the other. Knowing that being "lovely and fine" meant "being in the palm of his hand" and that being in a whale with the signs means a lot of wasted time.
I love songs like this cause there are so many ways for people to interpret them. That's cool! To me though this song is about freedom and wisdom and not waiting for anyone but to go towards what makes you happy.

Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade of Pale Lyrics 16 years ago
Isn't there some connection to Milton with that light fantastic bit?
This song is the perfect example of something being totally unrelatable yet totally beautiful. Maybe if I were from an older generation I would get it:)
