There seems a lot of contradictory evidence about this as I have heard Colin call this one of his 'double-suicide songs'. Who knows? It's better to have a bit of mystery and a personal interpretation. Having looked and listened to the lyrics it's a little dissapointing in some ways for me. While being a more interesting narrative it kinda ruins one of the most romantic lines (at least when it's sung) - "we fall but our souls are flying". Still gives me goosebumps. |

for me it's a song i can completely relate to. it's about young love, the intense feelings you can't understand that may only be crushes but are still deeply affecting. i remember thinking 'Your name is the only word i'll ever say'. 'I shrugged them off before my mom walked in my bedroom' may be a double-entendre but i feel it is the purer (or however you want to put it) thoughts of tears and loneliness that many of us have 'wiped away' before others could see it. 'I carved your name across my eyelids You pray for rain, I pray for blindness' - not entirely sure about the rain bit but it seems clear that his love for her is written everywhere he looks and all he wants is to forget her. 'The only thing that you keep changing Is your name, my love keeps growing' - he gets more and more crushes and says to himself that it's much more than the previous one. 'Still the same, just like a cancer And you won't give me a straight answer' - he equates it (in the same overblown/perspectiveless ways of a teenager) to something much worse and more evil. He also finds that not knowing makes it much more difficult and it is a tendency of girls to avoid giving a straight answer (maybe they think they're protecting us). 'On the grave of our old love Since you gave me a straight answer' - however, the longer she left it, the more emotionally invested he became and the straight answer (no) hurt him a lot. Whatever, it may be wrong and it's difficult to commit all the thoughts flashing through my mind to text but that's my view and i have to say, glorious beautiful song from a marvellous album. |

I recently saw an interview with Craig and he said that it isn't actually set in Bloomington because he felt he didn't know the place well enough to comment but it is based on every college town in America. So you could be right. but i got the impression that he didn't get arrested, he got killed. |
