Just like Prominent's posting of Matt's response, I see this song as incredibly inspiring. But I would like to focus on the positive more so than others might. You can't really get distracted with the anger you have toward fallen role models, but you just gotta stick to your guns all the way through. It's like if you were running a marathon, and if a friend who has inspired you to start running was running the race too, but halfway through, that friend stops running, you can't let that get you. You just gotta go as far as you can. It's your race now. The source of inspiration has to be within you. |

I think the song has layered meaning. I didn't even notice the mocking aspect until I read your comment, but that makes a lot of sense. People have a sense of pride in their hometowns, but I'm sure they all know about it's problems. To write a song about how awesome a city is would be over romantic, and to write a song about a city's issues would be depressing. He's not looking past NY's negative aspects, he loves his hometown and takes the good with the bad.
Sometimes it's not one-sided. The best writers never are. |
