This is such a brilliant and beautiful song. As to its meaning - "I'm glad that you're older than me Makes me feel important and free Does that make you smile, isn't that me?" That perhaps is a young prostitute that feels useless and realizes they can't strive in the the apocalyptic/disordered/corrupt society. "And I'll steal every moment If this trade is a curse" The trade being hustling/prostitution "Will you see That I'm scared and I'm lonely?" They are vulnerable and can't exactly abandon the trade - because its all they know? In Sweet Thing (reprise) there is a line that I think sums up this characters stance "Cause hope, boys, is a cheap thing, cheap thing" Its a tragic song and the sax is utterly fantastic and Bowie's voice is unbelievably powerful |
