How has no one commented on this beautiful song yet? I absolutely adore this song. And the acoustic version... mmm. Beauty defined. I personally think the lyrics speak of manic love. In psychology there are six 'styles' of love: -Eros, which is stereotypical Disney-movie styled love, the 'hopeless romantics' are usually here -Ludus, in which love is little more than a game -Storge, where love develops out of friendship -Pragma, where people think realistically and practically about the people they love; Wikipedia describes it as 'shopping-list love' -Agape, where lovers are entirely selfless (think Forrest Gump) -and lastly Mania, in which lovers feel that they "need" their partner. Manic lovers look to their others as a means of escape from life's troubles, and therefore feel totally helpless without them. "Could you map this globe" followed by lines of the speaker's deep troubles. And then those four honest, desperate words "cut me open please". The speaker's speaking to someone he relies on to get through. |

| Iron & Wine – Swans and the Swimming Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I agree with those who say it's about a woman coping with a break-up. The first two lines is a want to go back to her ex. "The pond with the swans and the swimming" is a brilliant, beautiful metaphor for this relationship, and all wonderful relationships. The next two lines describe how alone she feels; relics of their relationship bring her sadness. The next four lines are a bit of a mystery to me; if you've ever sat down outside and watched a sunset, maybe you might understand it a bit. They're beautiful. All I can say is that possibly the more enjoyable things in life bring her memories- like sunsets- but after these moments, she feels incredibly lonely and "breaks"; she falls apart. The chorus, with that heart-filling melody, seems to me as two lines that simply express the general theme of the lyrics and the mood of the entire song. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE that first line. When rain falls, rain falls everywhere, and rain covers everything, and the sound of it is something difficult to avoid; however the sound of gentle pouring rain is very, very soothing and lovely, coupled with the gray world outside. It's something sad yet beautiful at the same time, very much like the song and the story. The sun returning seems as if it doesn't give her any comfort. The first two lines of the second verse are all about how desperate she is for her man back. She's so tired of crying and being closed up- "careful behavior". It's a simple couplet, and it explains itself... and it's brilliant. "A brush through her hair, children kissing upstairs" is more of that trademark Iron & Wine imagery. A brush through her hair seems to me as just what it is; perhaps she is beautiful physically. Children kissing upstairs seems to signify more though- that could be her memories of intimate moments between her and her lover, most likely their first kiss. Also probably the feeling of her and him, and that feeling of "the whole world leaving" when she's with him. She remembers those moments and misses the hell out of them. "Want for her savior" could either mean want for her religious savior, or simply want for her ex-boyfriend. If that line is tied with religion, it could either mean she pleads for help from Him or she wishes for Him to take her away (i.e. death). The next four lines, I believe, occur in the same type of setting as "the pond with the swans and the swimming"; some place where she shouldn't despair. Of course, she is still despondent- the sun on her knees and hands gives warmth and light but that doesn't affect her. If I could only pick two lines that I like out of this entire piece, it would be the two lines following that last one. I hear "as she begs for a [instead of her] fish from the water/ but turned them away, she's a whip and a slave". She begs for help from others, and needs someone or something to support her in her time of need. But in her distress, she doesn't communicate well with others, and "whips" at the people around her despite some trying to comfort her. In this terrible hole this girl is stuck in, she's also a "slave" to her depression. She is devoid of hope. "...Given time she may find something better" is a thing whose meaning is self-explanatory. I regard it however as a literary device that serves a similar purpose as, say, a long slow zooming-out of the camera at the very end of a movie. I don't think there's a word in the English language that I could use to describe just how much I adore this song and Samuel Beam. This man is a brilliant poet and phenomenal musician. |

| I thought the same thing, actually... but I don't see how vintage analog synthesizers fit in with the lyrics. :P | |
| Crystal Castles – Alice Practice Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Everyone's gonna hear something different, since the vocals are so distorted. I actually hear her say "Obama" more than once in there. I also hear "Holy crud" instead of "Only crawl". I personally think that we should quit trying to decode the vocals, and just listen for the effect that they make. I absolutely adore this song, and how it feels like there's some sort of deeper emotion below the chaotic 8-bit arpeggios and madness. The distorted, nonsensical screaming and the stressful Atari sounds behind it suggest to me the idea of an emotion breakdown; where one doesn't think straight or act with their right mind but instead go totally fucking ape and hulk smash everything in their way, since they're so pissed. The "drop it, it's dead!" part is sort of where a person's anger begins to be washed away and replaced by sadness. Just my $.02 |

| The Police – King Of Pain Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I had always thought that this song was about mortality. Everything that lives must one day die. Perhaps, the speaker in this song dwells on his death? He sees other things that have met unfortunate ends... However, I think that the idea of depression might be closer to the mark. Perhaps it's both; the speaker is depressed because he feels he will one day meet an unfortunate end like the different things he notices. One thing that interests me is that all of the things that "die" in this song are all in their natural enviornments. The blue whale was in the ocean, the fox was in the woods; the "skeleton" needed bread because he was so skinny...? The only thing that throws me off is the exception of the black hat and the rich man. Just some food for thought. :/ |

| Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
There are a ton of things that this song may represent. Generally, I think that this song is about resistance to change. Everyone has had, are having, or will one day have a very unfortunate event change their life; this song is about the resistance to that change. This song reminds me, personally, of how unhappy I was when my parents divorced after the first 14 years of my life. The happy home life I knew completely crumbled. The "oily marks appear on walls/where pleasant moments hung before" verse is the most significant for me, because I spent my childhood in the house I had to move away from. I remember how my mother always told my brother and me to wash our hands after dinner, or else we'd leave finger marks on the stair walls... |

I absolutely adore this song. An 8-measure pattern repeating for nearly 5 minutes has never sounded so wonderful. |

| Bon Iver – Woods Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
People usually dog Auto-Tune because mainstream artists and rappers use it to fake-sing. Bon Iver instead uses and abuses it with only 20 syllables. With a single voice, he makes a whole choir on crack. It's wonderful. The reverb/delay/panned voices that come in around 2 and a half minutes in are pure magic; they sound like they're coming from mountains. |

| Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

"Swing wide... run me through" is the 2nd half of a ridiculously brilliant set of lines from Vernon. "Solace my game, solace my game It stars you Swing wide your crane, swing wide your crane And run me through" Like lyriclover81 said, this part states that the speaker acts cheerful on the outside (solace my game) while his ex-lover is destroying him on the inside (run me through). It's most definitely a feeling to indentify with. I'd need a thesaurus to describe just how amazing this song is. What a shame that the Bon Iver project is ending. |

| Jason Derulo – Whatcha Say Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I tend to think that the lyrics in pop music these days is a bunch of uninspired, meaningless garbage sprinkled with a little sugar. This song is a prime example. In the original song, the "Mhm, whatcha say?..." parts are actually spiteful ands sarcastic. Imogen speaks with contempt towards someone who hurt her when she speaks those lines. However, in this, apparently the speaker is trying to get a girl to come back to him. Completely opposite meanings... |

| Jason Derulo – Whatcha Say Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Welcome to the world of "sampling" in mainstream/top 40 music, my friend. It's a world where talentless artists mooch off of talented ones, and take all the credit. Imogen Heap probably makes 0.5% of all the profits from "Whatcha Say", even though her part makes the entire song. Of course, people like you and me hate this; but Jason DeRulo and his record label don't care at all, since they're making bajillions off of Imogen Heap, and because we're a minority |
