Your totally right Rae, Seattle is not a State. I did mean city when I said state. I was trying really hard to state my point in a clear manner and in doing so I misspoke repeatedly. Good catch. |

Good call. I gave a shot at interepreting it as a sexual theme but this is probably correct since most of his other songs sound happy and have darker, sadder meanings. Good work. |

In my opinion you are half right. He is singing about the state of Seattle but he is using the state and things that reside within it to express a deeper meaning. I believe that most of his songs have dual meanings. (Because if they didn't he would just be spouting cool sounding non-rational statements in some of his songs.) Therefore he is accurately depicting Seattle the state. But at the same time is is using duality to refer to something completely different. His depiction of Seattle the state is the cover that everyone can see but that cover is hiding a deeper meaning that you have to think hard about before you figure out what he is really saying. Kind of like a magic eye poster. You have to look at it for a while and try to see it for what it's hiding deep within, not just for it's pretty pattern that you see at first. Now what the deeper meaning is... I'm not really sure. But if I had to take a shot at it I would say that it is perhaps sexual, Seattle is a girl and he is a mountaineer IN her HILLS and highlands. Suggesting he is within her, He is a manta-ray within her "waves", He is the moon looking down at her beauty. As if to say that he is looking down at her while they are going at it. All these things seem to be portrayed as if they are happening simultaneously. Therefore he is experiencing all these things at the same time. He is a sleeping pill decending INSIDE of her. He is a seahorse WARM in her "sand". He sings about her tide and ocean surf aka her amazing female physique. "Carry me through the night" (That they are sharing) "Hold me secure in flight" (The flight in and out) "Sing me to sleep tonight" (after they are done) it all fits. He is an albatross (a seagull like bird) on her docks and boats means that he resides within her since the docks and boats are located within Seattle the state. And that he almost belongs there. Since seagulls are a natural part of the scenery. When you look at docks and boats you would expect to see seagulls there. When he is the light house he is red in the morning and blue in the evening. The color reference can be compared to blood that is red on the beginning of it's journey and blue at the end. Which could represent the deep relationship that he has with her. Red, Blue = Blood, Blood = Heart. (I'm reaching on this one...oh well, I'm trying.) It's a long shot at being accurate and I don't know if I really believe that interpretation myself plus you can make anything sexual if you try, but I had to give an example of underlying duality so you could understand my point that this song is just too weird and random if he is just talking about Seattle the state. If you wanted to look at it a different way, Seattle could represent something... And he is so in tune with this thing whatever it is that Seattle represents that they are almost one. Intertwined so deeply that conventional English cannot depict it accurately so he has to resort to deep and elaborate metaphors to describe how intertwined there existences are. Just another way to look at it if the sexual reference didn't do it for you. What do you think? |

Sdeph5200 Nailed it IMO. It's exactly right. If you watch the music video it has a ton of electric gizmos going off which suggests the correctness of his interpretation. Also to further back up his theory, Adam makes all of his music playing with his computers and MIDI keyboards in his parents basement while he can't sleep due to his insomnia (According to his biography from Winamp). So the very thing that is keeping him up is the reason why we can listen to such greatness! I guess his sleeping disorder was a blessing in disguise. |
