it is metaphorical, and florence and the machine are of course covering themselves they dont want people thinking their sadomasochists lol. Of course to the casual listener would seem to be a about violence, but what i actually think its about is a turbulent relationship where a couple are the opposite of each other so they both get on each others nerves alot but they still love each other even after all the arguments and even though they know they will continue to fight 'my black eye cast no shadow your red eye sees no pain' - this i believe refers to the fact that the argument was petty and didn't effect the way they feel for eachother 'broke your jaw once before spilt your blood upon the floor you broke my leg in return sit back and watch the bed burn' - this is saying they have argued but afterwards they can lay back appologize let the moment pass/allow the flames to die out then have a laugh about the whole thing. this is what i think its about hope i helped (rate if i did lol) |

i by far prefer this version the other one takes its self waaaaay to seriously lol (i still love florences music though lol) in general i think this song is (in my opinion at least) just about going to do something then thinking about something or seeing something that reminds you of something that made you smile :) and i genuinely feel like smiling after this song (the old version without the army of instruments) a really lovely song. |

trin i think you almost ad the right idea but i personally think my explanation is more on track. i think this song is actually about two of her friends perhaps (or two friends she once had lol) and both of these friends are weighing her down in some way perhaps because of their behavior towards other people. maybe the donkey is like a fat or low self esteem friend who doesn't like socializing and the jackal is a mouthy friend who gets her into a lot of trouble. And the reason she loves them so much is because their from her loins, but i don't think she means it literally, i believe this is her saying her friends feel like they are part of he which is the reason why she has the inability to separate with them. |

i think your all quite far off so far, it is quite literal to a certain point (which kind of makes it not literal lol) anyway I am pretty certain this is about a boy who sleeps with alot of people spreading an sti thus leading to their death. my reasoning is quite simple. 'My boy builds coffins with hammers and nails He doesn't build ships, he has no use for sails He doesn't make tables, dresses or chairs He can't carve a whistle cause he just doesn't care' this verse and the second talk about and express th fact he doesnt care who he sleeps with basically anything that moves is game to this guy. as expressed here 'They all come to impact (impact refers two 2 bodies colliding literaly) he's so eager to please' i could disect the rest but once your looking at it from this angle its pretty easy to work out the meaning of the song. if you agree please rate lol (its nice to know other people agree with you lol) |

| im with the majority of people so far that this is about a girl whos had to wake up from the fairy tale version of love she's been experiencing due to some kind of realization maybe its the betrayal of her boyfreind or his death, maybe it could be that the stark reality of sex disappointed her on her first experience. fantastic song i love the atomosphere thats built in the song. | |

Ok, i also think this is to do with nature/religon "There's a gap in between There's a gap where we meet Where I end and you begin" i think this refers to where they meet which is in his mind and it never goes any further than within his mind, but it can never go beyond that. And then the next line is "im sorry for us" i believe hes sorry for his thoughts and also for everyone elses dark thoughts the dinosaurs i think are the machines which plague the earth destroying forests etc until eventualy. "the sky turns green, where i end and you begin" the gap is restored i believe is what these two lines mean via his death where he ends and god begins, possibly. The next verse is him i believe talking from heaven viewing the world as god does. I am up in the clouds "I am up in the clouds And I can't and I can't come down" hes not saying heavens in the sky but his vantage point is of earth as a whole. "And I can't and I can't come down I can watch and can't take part" he saying he doesnt have the power to help the human race "Where I end and where you start Where you, you left me alone You left me alone" now hes on a spiritual plane in the realms of god perhaps even part of god and feels that we are ignoring god, thus being the reason why he feels we left him. "X will mark the place Like the parting of the waves Like a house falling in the sea In the sea" this i believe is a warning of how the end will occur "X will mark the place" i took this idea in its most literal sense and i think hes reffering to how a war plane drops a bomb they have a computer with an X crosshairs which aims where a bomb drops. "i will eat you alive" refers to his past self as a human what we all are we will eat ourselves alive i.e kill each other "there will be no more lies" when we all are dead and part of god there will be no more lies. |
