The singer has realized he needs to slow down in life. Get out of the fast lane where you can never get ahead. He realized he has missed a lot and has some things to find. He wasn't stopping to smell the roses. "Here comes a mermaid and a little girl, Saw open drawers from around the world." Here comes his little girl (slowpoke) and he has been busy traveling around the world for work. I got some medals hanging on my chest, I've seen some good ones, but I missed the rest. Whether actually war battles or just a way of saying he's done his time and been through a lot. Slowpoke I'm gonna run with you, Wear all your clothes and do what you do. Slowpoke we got some things to find, When I was faster, I was always behind. He is going to play with his little girl in her outfits and she can do whatever she wants to do. They have some things to find together. Later the verse changes to 'I've got some things to find' as well. and so on.... |

to build on what quitardon3 says I added my thoughts in CAPS below: Helplessly hoping her harlequin (the guy) hovers nearby Awaiting a word (some indication from her about their prospects together) Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit (he sees her appealing qualities) he runs Wishing he could fly (spirit being typically viewed as an air-borne quality, maybe he could catch her if he could fly) Only to trip at the sound of goodbye (which certainly takes the wind out of his sails) Wordlessly watching he waits by the window (he can see her but is separated from her) and wonders At the empty place inside (loneliness and yearning inside himself) - I THINK THE EMPTY PLACE INSIDE IS THEIR HOUSE Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams (maybe if he could take her troubles away things would be different) he worries Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello? (now he doesn?t know if he missed a cue from her or not) - I THINK "HELLO" IS HER COMMITMENT. HE ISN"T SURE IF SHE REALLY EVER WAS COMMITED TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP - SHE IS CONFUSED - SHE IS WITH THEM BECASUE THEY ARE MARRIED, BUT SHE CAN'T COMMIT AND IS HAVING AFFAIRS They are one person (they have the same dreams and fears - they are one & the same) They are two alone (they are both separated from each other) - I THINK THIS ISN'T "TWO" AND IS REALLY "TOO" - THEY ARE TOO ALONE BECAUSE OF HER CONFUSION AND LACK OF COMMITMENT They are three together (if they were 2 people together, they would be 1 couple. 2 + 1 = 3) - I THINK THERE IS A CHILD - THREE TOGETHER IS THEIR FAMILY - HER, HIM, AND CHILD They are for each other (at least in his mind) - I THINK THEY ARE FOR EACH OTHER BECAUSE THEY ARE A FAMILY Stand by the stairway you'll see something certain to tell you Confusion has its cost - I THINK THAT BY THE STAIRWAY IS WHERE YOU WILL SEE PICTURES OF THE CHILD AND FAMILY AS A WHOLE - THE COST IS HER CONFUSION HAVING A BAD EFFECT ON THE CHILD AND FAMILY Love isn't lying it's loose in a lady who lingers (he can envision it in her, and she hasn?t actually turned him away yet) - I THINK THIS MEANS SHE ISN'T LYING ABOUT HER LOVING HIM, BUT THAT HER LOVE IS LOOSE AND NON-COMMITAL - SHE "LINGERS" AND WON'T LEAVE BECAUSE SHE DOES LOVE HIM, BUT IS CONFUSED Saying she is lost (she is offering excuses) - SHE IS CONFUSED And choking on hello (and can?t bring herself to risk it and say yes to him) - CAN'T COMMIT |
