| Tegan and Sara – Walking with a Ghost Lyrics

For a song with so few words, it's incredibly complex. I love it. I definitely agree with the previous posts; I think that it is about an ex who still has feelings for their long-gone lover. The line "walking with a ghost," refers to continuing on life thinking about this ex, even though they are basically dead to each other (hence "ghost"). The line "out of my mind," is definitely a sort of mantra repeated by the speaker to convince themselves that they are over the other person. EVERYONE has gone through a breakup where they tell themselves that they are over this person, even when they obviously are not. |

I personally think that this song also applies to a promiscuous woman. I think the speaker is directly questioning both Rhiannon, and whoever her lover might be, in the line "will you ever win?" It addresses how, even if "heaven" is promised, the man will never truly have her commit to him, and how Rhiannon will never find the satisfaction she so desperately searches for. I don't know why, but I can never escape that idea when I hear this song. |

Like all great songs, this one is transcendent and applies to numerous situations and themes. My personal interpretation is of a breakup. I think that the snow-covered hills and the majestic mountains illustrate the beauty of a relationship that was soon to be rocked by a "landslide," or tough breakup. The second stanza obviously applies to the speaker's doubt in ability to continue after the end of the relationship. The line "climb a mountain and turn around," refers to the great effort and time invested in a relationship, only to have all the work undone. I think that the last stanza is addressing the other member in the relationship, as the speaker tries to explain their side. The final lines are telling the ex that if they "climbed a mountain and turned around," and "took down" their love, any lingering feelings, represented by the "reflection," will be covered by the "landslide," or pain of the breakup. |

| Martika – Toy Soldiers Lyrics

While this song could also be about drug addiciton, I see it as focusing on an unfaithful relationship in which the speaker feels remorse for going astray. Aside from obvious references like "it wasn't my intention to mislead you," lines like "it's true I did extend the invitation/ I never knew how long you'd stay" represent their acknowledgement of the cheating and the idea that the speaker had no idea how committed the other was in the relationship, and that it took the cheating to find out how deeply he/she cared for the other. The speaker compares themselves to an easily-manipulated "toy soldier" to represent their utter lack of commitment and the all-powerful influence of temptation, regardless of how hard they try. They realize that when cheating is involved, "we never win." The speaker come to the realization that by cheating, they are putting themselves in a situation where their heart will be the next one to be broken--either from being caught, or never finding and appreciating those that truly care about them. They see the only result from their actions as an "emptiness" that, while ending the pain, is an equally unappealing fate. |
