The lyrics are exactly what The Strokes claim they are... "hard to explain." We can all sympathize with the lyrics: "I say the right things, but act the wrong way" or "I shake my head to say everything's okay" or any other line, really.
We all understand what those lyrics are about, but we still can't really explain that meaning since they all mean something different to each individual. |

Yeah it's definitely about modern society. Criticizing and desensitizing children, modernizing them for war. Juxtaposition of of the "desk job" lines (organize, advertise, monopolize, etc.) and the "war" lines (neutralize, tranquilize, vaporize, etc.) shows how modern (American) society is all about either mindless capitalism at a desk or violence at a battlefield.
This is also my favorite Strokes song...it's so amazing when the guitar riff stops at "enemies to neutralize" building up all the tension and then comes back when Julian is screaming at "fury to tranquilize". So good |

Dude yeah Serj said in an interview it was when he was 12 years old in Armenia he went on a date with a girl and she introduced him to her friends, and he brought his new pogo stick that he got on Christmas and showed them his 1337 skillz. "It was so exotic" because it was an imported American toy. He says "pogo" like 67 times in the song, that represents his max amount of jumps on the pogo stick. 67 is a lot! Needless to say, all of the girl's friends were impressed. "I like to spread you out" because Serj jumped all over the place on the pogo stick that the girls had to spread out to give him space. |

I was just about to post about how it sounds like Requiem for a Dream. The guy is prostituting the girl for heroin, trying to save her with the drugs, but in the end he is the one that is in need when the girl leaves to do some ass to ass for heroin. |
