Peter Bjorn and John – It Don't Move Me Lyrics 15 years ago
First off, a few of the lyrics are wrong, including the the first line, which should be :
"Please put Chastity's books and magazines away,"
Then, even though it makes less sense, the second stanza following the chorus is:
"All these things that I keep without caring too deep..."
Lastly, the final stanza before the second chorus should read:
"You can't change what it's been before;
it's erased and you can't restore;
let the screen fade black... go, go;
I don't want it back."

So it's obvious this song is about a breakup, but based on it's tone and the lyrics I don't think it represents depression so much as it illustrates disinterest and apathy. It seems to tell the story of a couple who's relationship has ran it's natural course and a revelation that if things aren't working out and two people don't care for one another they should just move on. In any event it's a great song and it makes me want to dance awesomely. Peter, Bjorn & John are great songwriters, and every album they've released so far has been outstanding' there are 5 so far with a 6th on the way, so check them out if you haven't already.

My Morning Jacket – Lowdown Lyrics 16 years ago
“Lowdown, cheatin, aint no need for repeatin,
so love dawg cant ye see? That you never gotta fight with me.”
—Lowdown cheating dawg, but there’s no need to fight.

“Hurtin, Beatin, Aint no need for repeatin,
so love dawg cant ye see, that you never gotta bleed for me.”
—Hurting and beating (yourself up=remorse), but there’s no need to dwell (the past is just that).

“Chancing, glancing, sho nuff mood for romancing,
so love dawg cant ye see that you only gotta dance with me.”
—Chancing and glancing (forgiveness and making up), forget about it and focus on the here and now.

Straightforward lyrics, I think the simplicity is great, it’s a good one for sure.

My Morning Jacket – Gideon Lyrics 16 years ago
“Gideon, what have you told us at all?
Make a sound, come down off the wall.
Religion- should appeal to the hearts of the young.
Who are you? What have you become?”
-I think this is not comparing Bush or any other person to Gideon, but instead asking what the story of Gideon tells us, that a similar situation is going down today and we need to take “that story down off the wall” and learn from history. The rest suggests that even though the young are indoctrinated to learn and believe these tales it doesn’t appeal to them because they don’t understand it in a modern context.

“Truly, truly we have become
hated and feared for something that we don't want
Listen listen, most of us believe that this is wrong.”
-In reference to the Iraq war, Americans would be the Midianites (occupying Iraq). The psychological warfare in this day and age is terrorism, and as a result of this whole clusterfuck Americans (and the world at large) are now turning on one another in debate over (misdirected) retaliation and occupation.

The only lingering question I have is about the animal, is it the leader(s) of the U.S., ignorant Americans, lackluster Christians or the military?

My Morning Jacket – It Beats 4 U Lyrics 16 years ago
"And who could say but never do
Things they've said to someone who,
through all that's been and all will be
so in line so thoughtfully.”
>Seems to imply that he and this girl have a history and that his love was not obtainable for a while, whether it was unrequited, unknown or not possible for a more practical reason I am not sure.

"Who can count the time I'm beating with my hands?” could have several possible meanings…
>1. On the MMJ listing of songs this one is listed twice, and on the other one, a user suggested this was a reference to masturbation.
>2. The time I’m beating with my hands could suggest nervousness, as in tapping ones hands (keeping time, with a beat, real or imagined) in anticipation of telling her.
>3. If one was to anthropomorphize time, you could assume this means attacking/hating time itself, because you’re hurt that your time is wasted without her love.

“Who can stop the smoke from breathing in my head?
Words will come and words will go
Make believe and overthrow
Just believe and you can do”
>I think the smoke is referring to a thought or thoughts that have prevented him from pursuing this girl, presumably caused by words they had at some point. Now he has cause to overthrow this thought and pretend it’s possible for them to have something.

As for the rest of the lyrics they seem to explain his connection to this girl and the deepness of his feelings, that their thoughts align and their heartbeats are in time because his beats for her. Good song.

My Morning Jacket – Wordless Chorus Lyrics 16 years ago
I hate that I like this song as much as I do because I think it's the catchiest and most recognizable song on this album. Mainly because of the sound, but after reading and pondering the lyrics it's got an awesome message, one which I've try to embrace before I ever got into MMJ. Forget what pays, follow your instinct and your feelings, don't be an egg in the carton (safe and secure until the day your cracked open so some asshole can have an omelet).

By the way, the promise we made as kids…I’m guessing it was to never grow up, any thoughts?

My Morning Jacket – Steam Engine Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe Hearthemeaning did a nice job with his explanation, but much like TheKinfaun's interpretation I have to lean more towards a secular explanation of the lyrics, and though I won't go into as much detail as Hearthemeaning I'll try to clarify...

I think we can all agree this song is certainly about the presence of something beyond the physical world and what is tangible or quantifiable by scientific or technological means. I love the line "Take your money and your drugs" because it seems to imply drugs (recreational or prescribed) and money are not the solution to the most miserable moments in life. It's almost as if this song communicates that life is all about the relationships we have with those around us and it's your own thoughts at moments like that which make life seem beautiful and worth living. In this sense the 'Steam Engine' would be more like intellect, powered by our thoughts (the steam).

If you look at the song's structure, in each of the three parts separated by the repetitious portion you see that there is a reference to an interpersonal relationship:
-First, there is: "...but it's a voice and it's a choice to call you out or stay at home"
-Second, you have: "...but it's the touch you need so much to move around on this green earth"
-Third is: "...your skin looks good in moonlight and god damn those shaky knees, the fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need"

Though I can't be certain of what exactly James' is referring to in this song, I tend to think it's perhaps the soul or the realm of emotion and thought, or it may be God (though I kind of hope not, it lessens the impact to me). Personally I feel it's about emotion, in the end they connect us all, at least in the sense that they allow us to empathize/sympathize with those around us. When you think back to the most joyous events of your life were you alone? I find when I think about those times I was most often with friends or family and it seemed as though there was something special and transcendent about those moments. Now think about the most miserable moments in your life, the pain and the hurt that crush your soul; Then the relief and comfort you can find in loving embrace of another or just in talking things out with a friend. To me that's what this song is about because we all share the human experience.

Besides, the only concrete religious mention I see is: "To anyone who wondered what old Jesus meant to me, take him out to go diving in Red Patoka Sea" and I'm thinking this lyric is either wrong or an allusion to something else. After searching, I can find no reference to a "Red Patoka Sea" the only thing I find is Patoka, IL (which is landlocked unless you count Lake Michigan adjacent) or Patoka Lake, IN (for which I can find no mention of marvelous underwater vistas, so what could be moving about diving there?). It's entirely possible James intended a religious undertone for this song (I don't know), while my interpretation may not mesh with every line, that is just not what I gather from the lyrics.

The Killers – Goodnight, Travel Well Lyrics 16 years ago
I didn't care too much for 'Day & Age', thought it was a little lackluster, and while better than 'Sawdust' it fell short of 'Sam's Town' and 'Hot Fuss'. For me, this song was the albums most redeeming feature and it may actually be my favorite song of theirs, even if it isn't much like the rest of their catalog. I hope this represents a new direction for the band, personally I would love to see more songs similar to this one in future Killer's releases.

While I think it can be agreed that this song is about sickness and death, what resonates with me most is how Brandon conveys feeling powerless. In this way the song is really about a loss of hope, so I feel it transcends the literal meaning and becomes something with which people in a variety of situations can empathize. Anyways, a great band and a powerful song, I can't help but tear up when I hear it.

My Morning Jacket – Rollin' Back Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about a relationship that never reached it's full potential, and now that things have ended depression ensues. Even though he's given up he can't help but hold out hope that eventually things will turn out as he hopes.

I can SO relate to this song, in fact, when I was composing that last sentence I typed "Even though he's given up I can't help but hold out hope..." Haha, I'm pathetic, and life sucks sometimes...

My Morning Jacket – Run Thru Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm beginning to think that, at least to this point, this album tells a story. I may be mistaken but allow me to explain...

1. Mahgeetah - Either has feelings for a girl or feelings for his guitar (oh, musicians...) or both
2. Dancefloors - About the early days of touring
3. Golden - The touring continues and though it's good, absence from his beloved is saddening
4. Master Plan - Relationship tensions grow and he grows more sad
5. One Big Holiday - Remembering the bands start and his reasons for leaving home
6. I Will Sing You Songs - Admitting the relationships going to fail, but holding out hope
7. Easy Morning Rebel - He had faith when they were together, but it's rapidly fading
8. Run Thru - Trying to escape the hoplessness or depression.

Therefore, I think this song is about trying to escape (run thru) feelings or maybe running from his current life back to his home (her).

Anyone?

Is this song about Jesus? or are they simply allusions?

Only guess I have is this may be about finding/loosing faith, just a guess though.

My Morning Jacket – I Will Sing You Songs Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds like SpiritThumb summed it up pretty well, nicely done. If this description is accurate then in that line "Stories of the greater years fill your heart and soul with cheer/tears" I think either makes a fair amount of sense. Cheers in the case of nostalgia in the good ol' days and tears if the relationship is soon to end. Regardless, good song...

My Morning Jacket – One Big Holiday Lyrics 16 years ago
No other word for it, this song just simply ROCKS.

On the 'It Still Moves' Wikipedia page this is the only song with a link, it connects to a stub which contains the following: "Its signature guitar riff and the lyrics, telling the story of the band being "discovered", continue to make it a fan favorite and staple of live performances." Which means Coffee and TV got it right first, and then Wingdingo did a fine job of breaking it down for us as though we were mentally deficient (haha). Nonetheless, kudos to you Wing...

My Morning Jacket – Master Plan Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a good song and there are certainly sexual references, but (and I could be wrong here) I'm thinking this may be a follow-up to 'Golden.' Some parts sound like relational stress that could result from the tension of a long distance relationship, like that James would have with his lady while on tour. I think this particularly because of the phrases that contradict themselves and the following:
"Know that it will start off strong babe,
And it will end up weak in the end.
Just like the heart you break of a love babe,
Just like the hand you take of a friend."
In other words, their relationship starts strong then weakens over time and she breaks his heart by seeking the comfort of a (male) friend; Just my opinion, I welcome criticism.

I agree with Quadrophenic's comparison, I've always thought James sounded like Neil Young and some songs are similar to Neil Young's stuff. My Morning Jacket's catalog is like Neil Young's (without the harmonica) if all his albums were as successful as 'Harvest'.

Anyways, Tenesseefire did a great job breaking the lyrics down, MMJ is quite awesome and this is a great song. I typically relate more to somber songs, but while this song's message is mainly reassuring I find myself really enjoying it.

My Morning Jacket does have a very versatile sound, this song is so '80s southern rock. I think Scotty has it right (life on the road), I just wonder about the last few lines, from 'loaded questions' on.

On a side note...I've noticed similar things in my own limited travels where I live (WV), every town you visit you see nothing but churches, pawn shops and dive bars. I find it ammusing that they're all oriented towards alleviating people's troubles and that for most, they're visited in a cycle. You blow your money getting loaded, pawn your stuff for money and eventually hit rock bottom, then you end up in church. haha

My Morning Jacket – Phone Went West Lyrics 16 years ago
Thanks to yoshiidino for teaching me a new word, and to Inuka for a good laugh "...or not. I don't know" haha, honesty is hilarious.

Oh, and is fetustree joking? haha

This song reminds me of the Cheap Trick song, 'I want you to want me'. But beyond the desire to be wanted (or needed), obviously the knock on the front door would be some kind of overt romantic gesture, probably a direct confrontation. I'm just not completely sure what the back door refers to, and why or how it would be locked..

My Morning Jacket – I Needed It Most Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the line "I cannot crumble, what you want this to be" might me wrong...

I hear "I will not crumble, what you want this to be?" as in 'what do you want this to be?'

Larry's right, that does suck and I think his description is good, but axround3r brings up a good point as well. Just one thing I would add, the first three lines make me think the relationship began with unrequited love and at some point that ended, now they're together but it's not perfect. I would just like to know what "dark" and "ghosts" he's referring to.

My Morning Jacket – Death Is the Easy Way Lyrics 16 years ago
I've only recently started listening to My Morning Jacket, after seeing that episode of American Dad (Season 5, Episode 7 "My Morning Straightjacket" very funny). As I listened to their studio albums chronologically this was the first song that really grabbed my attention, I think it may be the best on the album.

Now, as for the meaning I believe 'girlfromthenorthcountry' is right, my first thought after reading the lyrics was hopeless addiction. However, 'comebakatz' has a point..."'cause nights tick by like a long week, except when you stop by" would seem to imply romantic feelings about this person (presumably a girl).
Basically, what I gather from this song is a guy loves a girl who's addicted to drugs, but he still cares for her despite her self-destructive tendencies (drug use, and alcoholism when drugs aren't available). As for death being the easy way I cannot be certain if he means for himself (most likely due to the lack of reciprocity), or for her (as a means to end her addiction) or quite possibly for the both of them (to alleviate their suffering).

Grizzly Bear – Fix It Lyrics 16 years ago
I think eatbeast hit the nail on the head, pretty much anyway. It seems to me as though the repetitive nature of the lyrics may imply a repetitive behavior. Specifically, as in a dysfunctional on again-off again relationship where one person keeps falling back into this pattern under the mistaken impression they can fix their partners flaws.

...which is impossible by the way

Grizzly Bear – Disappearing Act Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe there is an error in the last verse...

"The cave did lead us clearly to something"
sounds more like: "Looking did lead us clearly to something"

Now...as to the meaning of this song, no idea, but I would love to know myself.

Great band though and a good album as well.
