This song is amazing. I don't understand what exactly he's referring to. But I actually read someone's comment from another site and they interpreted it as him feeling he's been betrayed by God or his belief in some sort of spiritual thing (I'm not sure what it'd be since he's mormon. I'm not aware of their beliefs). Hence the line, "I don't want to buy into your lies, stare up at the sky and sing, I surrender myself for this." The rest of the lyrics I think tie in well to that concept, but in some points I think he could just be questioning life in general. I'm not sure. And about the "yelling in the background" during the bridge, I've been wondering what he says as well. I've just sent Cove a tweet so hopefully he can reply and let me know what he's saying. If so, I'll post it up on here. |

Okay I'll take a swing at it... Maybe it's about depression? "Woke up again sweating out all the poison and I feel it again, I know it's coming again." He could be referring to alcohol - usually in songs when they say poison, they are referring to alcohol. He's possibly gone on the bender again after something or someone has affected him somehow. It's dragging him down and making him depressed again. "I try to make it for an hour or two, but I know in the end, yeah I know in the end... This place will hit me so hard, this face will end up so hard." Maybe he means stay off of the booze for an hour or two but in the end he knows he'll have no choice simply because he's so depressed about the whole situation and it won't get off of his mind. Dunno what he's referring to when he says "this face". Maybe the face of the situation? Or his face will end up hard, written metaphorically, like he'll become so callus from the depression? "Tell me what did I do wrong, 'cause I can't remember anything." Maybe it's a bit over exaggerated. He's saying he can't remember how he got in that situation and why - how he got in that state. Maybe he just feels he hasn't done anything wrong and he doesn't understand why he's dealing with the world weighing so heavily on his shoulders. "How can I run away from all of the sadness when no one's around to tell me where it began?" So he may be going through depression but he's struggling to deal with it simply because he feels he's alone, and he's got no one to support him. He's finding "life" hard because he feels he's stuck on his own. "..to tell me where it began." He means he's got no body to talk it over with - no one to trace back the steps and realise where he went wrong and how he can fix it. He's got no one to reassure him about the whole situation. "These steps I climb are so hard. Your voice will hit me so hard." The steps, meaning life. He's realising life is a massive struggle, and the steps we climb are very difficult. I think he's referring to this person, maybe a girl that he's just broken up with, and maybe she's the reason he's in this state. He may be referring to someone else...I have no idea. "Now I know the hardest part is letting go. But I just can not be afraid of what's below." I think he's saying people are afraid of death/falling down and having to end their lives/happiness. But because of this depresssion or state that he's in, he's not afraid to die. He doesn't really care about what happens with him next. ("..what's below." - referring to death/the afterlife) And when he says, "I imagine we were made for..." I'm not sure. Maybe he's just questioning life itself and what our purpose is. And whatever that purpose is, why do we have to go through all these struggles on our own? How do we make it on our own when there's no one around to help us? He feels through this experience, he may have learnt the meaning of it all, but in the end he fades out, because maybe he just can't figure it out? I don't know. That was just my wild guess. And maybe they put some irony in the song, becasue if it really was about depression, the music is in a very upper key with a joyful tune. It's almost like they're making it sound like, this is life. You go through all of this, but it's life. It happens. You need to learn from it, become happy out of it and as you throw it behind you, you'll learn the purpose of it and the importance of it, and how it has taught you a lesson. Everyone will feel this way at some points in their lives: "I can't carry this all on my own.". It happens. And we grow strong from it. |

I love this song. It sucks they only have it on the Japan released albums though. I thought it could be about a guy not being noticed by a girl too, but I don't see how some lines relate, such as: "They don't treat you the way that they treat me, They treat you different" & "Get me out of here they don't seem to care" I mean, who would he mean when he says 'they'? It sounds like a lot of the song is relating to his own internal pain and not necessarily all about the girl. Maybe it's the affect the girl had on him? I really have no idea. The songs awsome, I love the heaviness and the guitars in the chorus, but personally I don't like all the auto-tune they've used on Cove's voice. It would sound much better without it. |

After reading everybody's opinions on here and analysising the lyrics with my friend, I think I've nailed the meaning now. Like everyone's said, it's obviously about getting in an argument with a loved one, and finally opening up and saying exactly what they feel. The only reason I couldn't understand these lyrics is because I read it wrong. The pre-chorus bridge and the chorus are written as one sentence, so it'd be like reading it as: "And when you're on your way down through the clouds, and you're waiting for your body's re-entry again, we speak in different voices when fighting with the ones we've loved." Like some people have said on here, when he's talking about them "coming down through the clouds", he's talking about how throughout the argument, it's almost as if their ego has left their body, so what's left behind is just completely THEM. In relationships/friendships or any relationships, a lot of people hold what they can really feel back because their own reasons, or maybe in fear of hurting the other person. They make say fake things to suit a situation. But when they open up and spill everything out, it's like they are speaking in different voices from how they usually "talk". Hence Cove saying, "I'm missing parts, now that you've told me everything" So yeah, I 'd say techinally the song is talking about how we hold things back and hide from our true thoughts, and that we never really say what we mean. ("Why can't we say what we're thinking of") And I think he says, "Not even I will tell" or "Just know I'll never tell", because he's just wanting them to be straight forward, and whatever they say or feel, he'll keep it to himself? I'm pretty dead set that that's what the song is about...correct me if I'm wrong. But all in all, this song and band is.so.fucking.amazing. |

No he says, "I want it all to end like this" How has no one written anything about this song? It's amazing. I really want to know what it's about. The first thing I thought of was a love affair. And possibly coming from the person who is sleeping with the other person that's cheating on their partner. Not sure. My opinion is that this person's friend died in a car accident, and that the narrator is singing about himself when he says, "He had a plan to kill you all along." (Not literally obviously. He may just see himself as a murderer because of his bad decision) I suppose he was the driver and it was his fault they crashed. "You're the only one that wore your seatbelt, we're the only ones that cried." The victim was being safe and going by all the rules, but the driver is the reason the victim died (Maybe he wasn't thinking straight/drink driving/or fatigue: "So the headlights murdered my thoughts"). I think he feels somewhat guilty because the victim didn't deserve it, and I guess he sees himself as a murderer. "So keep my casket closed." I believe this means it wasn't his time to die and he was the person who survived, even though he shouldn't have. "All the choices you've made, and the paths that I take. You're the only one that died" Also shows how an innocent person died because of somebody elses bad decisions. Not sure if that's correct but that's what I reckon. All in all, it's an amazing song and Ronnie has an amazing talent :} |

I believe this song (not sure if it's true) is a prayer to God coming from the perspective of a struggling person. It's as if this person is finally turning back towards their faith after ignoring it for so long, and realising that they need God more than anything for some support and direction. In the end of the song they are letting God know that their whole heart goes to him, and that next time they will always be listening. This could be true aswell because Paramore (or Hayley) are very religious and devout to God. So that's what I think =] |

OMG i agree with you. that's the first thing I thought of when I read the lyrics. I thought mentally, like she was too good for him and the whole thing seems so unreal to him or some shit I dunno. Wow I knew he wrote this about his wife but I didn't know it was after their first kiss. I thought he wrote it while they were engaged. Oh wells. Such a sweet song. I think this was like the second love song i heard from Green Day. First was redundant (my fav) and they are actually very good at writing them. Every love song they write gives me shivers when I listen to it. Just the use of words. Very very very veryy good way of putting things.
