Arctic Monkeys – My Propeller Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this one is about needing drugs to spark some creativity. Again with with a lot of the lyrics on humbug they can be interpreted in a few ways and still make perfect sense, turner really seems to have developed as a songwriter (and he was pretty good to start with).

The song bounds along to a very catchy very psychedelic bassline. I think 'oil up those sticky keys' is the drug loosening his creative block, 'keys' could be referring to musical key changes or keys on a piano. The chorus implies this as well - 'My propeller won't spin and i can't get it started on my own'. Turner has said in an interview that propeller refers to a state of mind. #

It's a necessary evil
No cause for emergency
Borrow the beak of a bald eagle
Oh, momentary synergy

The drug is the necessary evil required to achieve the state of mind and no 'cause for emergency' could be his justification for using and in turn a denial of addiction. Synergy is the point when his mind begins to click and creativity is sparked. 'Borrow the beak of a bold eagle' is extremely abstract, a common motif of drug inspired lyrics.

This is one particular way of reading it though it does also carry strong sexual connotations. It wouldn't surprise me if that was Turner's intention.

Arctic Monkeys – Potion Approaching Lyrics 16 years ago
I couldn't agree more, this song has all the trimmings of acid-rock. The lyrics are ambiguous as they almost always are with drug related songs (unless you're the velvet underground...). There are far too many acid references and the overall mood of humbug is deeply psychedelic

If you have been wondering what the arctic's have been doing since 'favourite worst nightmare', you now have your answer.
