| Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I view the female pronoun in the beginning of the song to somewhat personify sin, and the antithesis of strict religion. She has humor, she's the giggle (mockingly so) at a predominately religious affair (a funeral). Knows everyone's disapproval- sin is what it is despite people's objections and disdain, he wishes he had embraced it earlier instead of trying to conform to the church's beliefs I like the next line about sin("her") being heaven's last true component (last true mouthpiece). He'll only be happy when he fully embraces the sin and the imperfection. I see the chorus as a metaphor for sex as well, maybe going further into that a sort of bdsm kinda thing (i'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife), but obviously not quite that literal since it's all a metaphor anyway. Which makes sense if you mean to imply that church/ going to church is kind of masochistic. You're always condemned, yet you keep coming back? I love the line about the high horse. Brilliant lyrics that come along with an incredibly catchy song for such powerful lines. |

| The Academy Is... – About a Girl Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| This entire album is William coming out. There's an interview from when this album dropped of the band saying "William had something really important to say and I think he did that with this album." Something to that effect. But I mean, this song is really the clearest. "I'll wait here every day in case you scratch the surface, she'll never notice" Seems pretty direct to me, he's wanting to love this girl, any girl and he's trying but he knows deep down he never will. "The Test" is pretty clearly about him hooking up with a guy who's confused about his sexuality too. "If this is a test, I'm wasting my breath. You're a stranger I know well" i.e. you're just like I was. And "Automatic Eyes" "Would you want me to go if you knew what I know." And "Rumoured Nights" Sounds to me like a third person perspective about all the rumors circulating that William is gay. Maybe his thoughts on what people's reactions will be. And "His Girl Friday"..."Call on a monday, come on a Tuesday they'll never know" Just my thoughts. I think it's cool that he can be open with people/fans and just answer questions with an album and leave it at that | |
| Band of Horses – Cigarettes, Wedding Bands Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I think the song is generally about a parent's failed marriage, and consequently a child who's grown to fear/loathe relationships, or at least become very cynical. The beginning lines could refer to simply walking through life, going through life without much care "pissing it away.". The line "we sit out in the weather" could refer to being dead, buried in the ground. Weather the line is "failure" or "familiar," either way it sounds like a father's advice to his child, don't get too close to someone, wash your hands of familiarity. I really like the line, "Violence it ripped through the old dogwood fence, See the whole scene unravel." The "old dogwood fence" is the antithesis of a white picket fence. The family wasn't perfectly happy, there was dysfunction and things unraveled. I think the song then takes a turn into questioning faith, which is obvious with my favorite line "But dead folks in the clouds, for crying out loud." Also, the repetition of the lines "they lied at night" seems to discuss hypocrisy or dishonesty despite what was preached. His parents were lying at night, lying next to one another despite their failing relationship. I wonder if the line "our parents' hands: cigarettes, wedding bands" is equating cigarettes and wedding bands. The cigarettes signifying a sort of silent, slow killer. Smoking is a danger, yet people continue years upon years and it wears on them, much like a bad marriage? Overall just a great song |

| Lydia – Your Taste Is My Attention Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I don't see this as being about their last night together, I think it's about their first night together. Maybe a long distance relationship where they met online or met in person but never really hung out alone. "I know nothing of your taste/ come on just press against me". The line "I finally have your attention" says to me that he finally has her next to him, her undivided attention no screen barrier or telephone lines. He's trying to get her to stay up since they only have this night together. He's telling her they are safe wherever they are. Like they're hiding away from the world just the two of them. He marvels at just knowing what's going through her head "watch these cars go by and tell me the first thing that comes to your mind". It's like he just wants to know her thoughts, or maybe he can't read her. "Watch as I go back I just came to say that you'll never see me again. This clock is ours now, 'til morning." supports the idea that they are miles apart and they are trying to get the most out of their one definite evening together. "So stay right there in that frame, this picture is how we speak. You'll never see me again, cause I miss you already." He wants to capture this moment in his mind and remember it forever. She'll never see him again maybe because he is scared of his strong feelings for someone he's only truly met once? They're together and he's already dreading the thought of her being away and what a loss it will be. and he doesn't want to further a relationship that seems impossible, it's easier to just say they'll never see each other again and that's it. And being that you haven't seen me. I don't belong in anything you dream, in anything we dream." Hinting at their relationship being so ridiculous and incomprehensible to anyone but them. Since they haven't seen each other save for this evening, it would be insane to dream of each other being together or care about each other at the volume they do. "She said 'Put your hands back on my skin and say you loved me, 'Cause I can't live like you do. Never could.'" ...maybe she can't live the way he does, without love. He could be a cold person and she just wants to hear him admit what they both know is true, that he loves/loved her. "Come on, just press against me. You always have my attention, and please speak up, lover." This could still be her talking. She's still telling him to admit his feelings, speak up we only have right now. He says "stay with me and I will try to tell you". He'll try to put his feelings into words, but they're hard to understand since there's so much impossibility associated with their situation. .......amazing song |

| Between the Trees – Darlin' Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I get the sense that one of the parties (or both) is dating someone else. He says the crimes of wanting you so badly like it's forbidden. And in the beginning it seems like he tries to end things "this call is meant to be breif, a simple hello ending with goodbye", but now his goodbye is turning into goodnight as in they decided to continue whatever they're in. He can't love her, yet because him or her is already taken. He's leaving his hand close to hers so she can take it, but he doesn't make a move because that's too bold. Just a thought. |

I kind of get an Eternal Sunshine vibe... the reference to sand and "I ever want you to be erasing me"... possibly. |

haha in my opinion, I don't think he's literally trying on her clothes.. I was thinking he means her miniskirt looks hot on her.. but it looks hotter on her when she's on him? But I guess the cross dressing theory is more comical... |
