The Strokes – The End Has No End Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't see anyone on the same track as me, but nonetheless I think of the end of Ralph Ellison's book Invisible Man when I hear this (which I read for school). "It's not the secrets of the government that's keeping you dumb, no it's the other way around" sounds like a major theme at the end, since the populist organization he joins ends up being his greatest enemy, not necessarily the government. "He want it easy, he want it relaxed" reminds me of a scene where he has some difficulties with a woman named Sybil, for those who've read the book. The chorus makes some sense because after this scene he takes a long "walk outside" through NYC where there are riots and looting, the result of a failure to "keep down" the people of Harlem, then retreats "underground" into a manhole. "Can't you find some other guy?" could relate to the fact that he's been taken advantage of the entire book and gets pretty tired of that. Also, somewhere in the book he says that "the end is in the beginning yet lies further ahead." This statement is pretty vague (as is "the end has no end"), but both portray the same sense of perpetuity. Unfortunately the book does not take place in the 60s, although 1369, a scramble of 1963, is the number of lightbulbs his room is home to (that's a long shot). Overall I think it's interesting how many comparisons I found in my first few listens.

Showbread – Myth of a Christian Nation Lyrics 14 years ago
I guess my view of the church has been pretty positive over the years, so a lack of experience could be an issue, but if as an American I'm oblivious to this, how can it really be an American thing? According to you it's just a southern culture, or even specific to where you live in the south. Where I live, and in view of the nation's media, I see almost no connection between Christianity, especially abused verses, and foreign policy, or even most of the general perception of the United States. With the TV media and the internet, if I haven't experienced it, it's almost sure not to be the dominant thought in the nation a a whole as is implied in this song. I'd be interested to hear what exactly you observe Christians/patriotic clowns doing, though, in my lack of experience.

Thrice – Broken Lungs Lyrics 14 years ago
In response to those that don't think these lyrics are Thrice-like in their political and specific nature or disagree about 9-11, I'd say if a band finds the need to question the official story of 9-11, this is probably the least controversial and most open-minded way to do it. I say this because the main point is a lack of knowledge ("we want the truth" etc.) and not a specific theory. It's not insulting, stereotyping, rebellious, or disrespectful. I think the music's softer but dynamic sound sort of conveys this attitude, that we have to be careful on the subject since deception is everywhere.

Thrice – Wood and Wire Lyrics 15 years ago
Well I didn't look as far into this as some of you guys did, but I just think of it as painting a picture of pure emotional agony and torture, then saying "but all my sufferings lie in momentary pain", etc. Leading him toward the thing he most desires, in my mind, was just mental torture, like leading a starving man up an endless staircase with a nice steaming turkey at the top. This could be a way of depicting how life is sometimes, where you're lacking something and you really desire it, and all around you are people who posses it. By the next verse he turns it around from an anthem of self-pity to a song of praise to God for giving us such a great and infinitely-good reason to have hope even in such a horrible situation. That's why we call it the gospel, or "good news". Basically, in the end, to me the message is that sadness is madness. The end of the song, however, sounds like he's dying, so I can't argue too much about the death penalty.

Future of Forestry – Someday Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's actually "questions of worry and affray". And as for the meaning, it's of course talking about how the fallen world is just the temporary part of our lives and telling us to relax and have hope in that.

Showbread – Myth of a Christian Nation Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree that America is too strongly asserted to be a "Christian nation" as if it has one collective soul that has been saved. But "believing anything we're told and gunning anybody down"? Sorry, I don't see it anywhere around me. It's not just that it's unpatriotic, it's that it's untrue. I've never heard anyone connect America to Christ (maybe to Christian culture or a vaguely mentioned "Creator"), I don't see how we're "gunning everybody down", I can't think of a scripture that is abused for America's sake, and in general it's just a sour rant. What is it about the word "America" that freaks out all the musicians in the world? Maybe I just need to read that guy's book. I don't know.

"I know you think the flag's got something to do with being free
But what makes you think that matters to me?"

Maybe the fact that you're using the very freedom that you claim to be so apathetic about to write these very words. Writing that is sort of self-defeating. Everyone believes in freedom whether they know it or not. Any reason I've heard for opposition of freedom is that some other person is misusing it (so people want their own freedom to take away that of others). No one wants their own taken away and if they do, they are taking their freedom away by their own free will.

But the bottom line is, at some point the guy writing this has heard lies about Christian culture or seen a very small minority of it which is like what he describes in the song. Or read a ridiculous-sounding book (yeah, I know I haven't read it). He should be grateful for the opportunity he has to parade his faith in front of as many people as will listen and make a living off of it. By the way, "For the one who is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward." Mark 9:40-41. Words of Jesus. What's wrong with those who have pride in their faith? That verse will apply until someone can give me a good example of how "patriotic clowns" have misused bible verses or gunned opposition down.

mewithoutYou – My Exit, Unfair Lyrics 15 years ago
I said "water," expecting the word would satisfy my thirst! talking all about the second and third when i haven't understood the first

He's not talking about the Trinity here. He's saying he talked about the second and third (the word "water" and his thirst) without understanding he needs the first (water itself). I can't speak for Aaron Weiss, but I can relate to this line as being caught up in some emotional state longing for what God can give me, and half-understanding all the words about him and what he does (and asking, why can't he do that for me too?), but never really letting him come in and actually quench my thirst.

Blindside – All of Us Lyrics 15 years ago
Why do people say, "Blindside is Christian whether you like it or not, and so you're dumb if you think it's about a relationship"? Obviously they can write some songs about fellow human beings. Is Yemkela talking about God too? Are they saying God's dying? I agree wholeheartedly that meanings are not subjective (unless the artist made them that way, which always bothers me), but if the song helps someone through a non-God thing in life, they aren't automatically stupid. They shouldn't act like that's the real meaning though if it's not. They also shouldn't think that just because they interpret the song that way it becomes magically yet another way the lyricist meant it.

As far as my opinion on the song, I don't really have a strong one, but it seems pretty God-aimed lyrically to me.

Blindside – We Are To Follow Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought he was saying "we are nothing, wrong, and blind", sort of talking about how God is all knowing/powerful and compared to him we're really not trustworthy. So "we are to follow" him, not let our "nothing, wrong, and blind" selves lead. That's just my way of thinking and everyone else is probably right though. It's a pretty small difference anyway.

Blindside – Pretty Nights Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is pretty confusing to me, but I think the message is sort of about how we're always chasing after an exciting lifestyle. When everyone's doing this and it becomes normal, the pace of life picks up and becomes almost louder until you have to scream to overpower it (just paraphrasing the song there). The bridge part (AKA the best part of the song) I think talks about when things finally slow down and we realize all the fast paced living "normalized us and paralyzed us and left us with a sadness". I really am not sure about this, but I can't think of anything else for now. I wouldn't say this is a "Christian interpretation", but the song is an honest reflection on life that stays in line with Christian values.
BTW this is one of my favorite songs. I think the driving, ahead-of-the beat rhythm coincides with this interpretation, which is cool.

Blindside – Pitiful Lyrics 15 years ago
To me this is totally a song about trying to turn from sin. The second verse is most powerful, since it reminds us that the Romans did not crucify Jesus, but each and every one of our sins did. Then it depicts Jesus as trying to search for his eyes, but he betrayed him and looked away (falling to temptation again). This depicts how closely and personally that God gets to us when we're pushing him aside. The whole song is about redemption (you're breaking into my prison, I'll remember every word you said, this time I won't look away, etc.). With this interpretation I think it's very powerful. I don't get how you can interpret it other ways when this convicting, powerful, articulate message is staring you right in your face. Just saying.

Blindside – Eye Of The Storm Lyrics 15 years ago
Just so everyone knows, the eye of the storm is a sudden calm part in a rotating storm, like a hole in the middle. It's not a really strong part. But yeah, I agree with most of the interpretations given so far.

Blindside – Silence Lyrics 15 years ago
They won't see the fire you have lit inside of me.
They look up to the stars and wonder where you might be.
Leave the gun. Without realizing they're standing in the palm of your hand. I can't explain or understand.
I just love you.

It's common knowledge that; you've been dead for a while.
It's well known that the cross is only a burden with pains
and trials. But thinking how come my shoes are so light, how come I can walk for miles?
And still, just love you?

I think this part is about his (or many people's) relationship with God and the fact that the outside world (represented by "they" and "common knowledge, etc.) can't see the reason for believing in or following God. "It's common knowledge that you've been dead for a while" means people think God only did miracles back in biblical times, and the cross being a burden means that people think Christianity is a religion of rules that are just a pain and pointless. But then he refutes both these ideas by saying he can walk for miles through God, which is, for one, a sort of modern miracle, and also shows that God gives more than burdensome guidelines.

As far as the heart beating twice as fast line goes, I think it's just another example of Blindside's usual personification of God, with other examples seen in My Alibi (you walk straight at me and then straight through me, and then stop) and Fell in Love With the Game, I think (we wrestled in the mud and the blood and the beer, and you grab me by the hand, etc.). God walking by just means he's getting closer, as most of us have experienced at certain times. Making it in to a romantic song just because of that one line is going to far I think, when the rest of the song has so much wisdom and meaning and makes so much sense if you interpret it in the God way. And a double meaning in such a heartfelt song would seem very insincere and sort of disappointing.

For me, the silence thing is sort of talking about how he can connect with God. In my experience, when we strip our lives down to our self, our god, and his creation, we can be closest to him. Aside from all of the trying to find our place in a fleeting world, we can listen to the voice of God, which is, as far as decibels and sound waves go, silence. I'm not saying we should go all out and sell our home and live in the wilderness, but I think silence and nature really revives. This is what I thought immediately the first time I heard this great song, and I'm sticking with it.

Billy Talent – Saint Veronika Lyrics 15 years ago
If he's really saying "damn god" I don't know if I want to listen to this song anymore (I'm a Christian, I can't really justify that coming into my ears). Someone please prove to me it's "dear".

Future of Forestry – Set Your Sails Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that this is an encouraging song to help us in the Christian mission. The beginning is tell ing us to get off our butts and work harder in our mission. The silver moon shining for us could be the holy spirit, and the night might be the dark world we're supposed to "sail" into. The chorus is telling us to be optimistic and put our hope in heaven ultimately (which is crucial if we want to spread the word). That's my theory of this great song, and it seems to make a lot of sense. And it's very encouraging too.

Switchfoot – Stars Lyrics 16 years ago
What I always hear in this song is just that when we look at god's creation (stars symbolize this in the song) it shows us that there is someone else unseen that made it all, and that there is no need for loneliness because this being (god) is always everywhere with us and loves us. It's one of the more optimistic songs on the album (btw one of the best albums ever).
