I like barifkin's explanation better than mine, but I love Umphrey's so I just wanted to add another comment. I think it sounds like it's about procrastination, and how laziness and putting things off has torn his soul and motivation. Like with all of the time wasted, there is nothing left but regret and no excuses for that kind of behavior. That interpretation only really matches half of the lyrics though, because the other parts say how they have found a way out, and "it's all your circus now" which sound for sure like a good thing. However, it sounds like he just can't take his own advice, or feels powerless to overcome the laziness, so even though they found a way out, he needs to be dragged along. Like the way some people get really lazy when smoking up, and smoke away years of their lives, only to regret it later on. |

Agreed - Dax has got the most unique voice of my generation, and with Acid Bath screaming??? Incredibly versatile, too bad most people can't get down to the lyrics about death... Well as for a meaning, I would think this is - wait for it - about death! Lol go figure right? Well it seems like death is the main theme with Dax, and really you could relate that to the acid that he did, and how tripping can feel a lot like dying. I see this song as trying to explain that he has died in trips before, and seen what it is like to be dead. As in, "we will always be everywhere, everything". This means a few things - the theory that everyone/everything is interconnected at some quantum level is not at all ridiculous considering the scientific discoveries being made every day. I believe that he is saying that when we die we all go back to the state of being one with God, which is to be everything at once. I don't mean God as in the bearded white dude in the sky either. Like this song says, if death is as bright - like dying is becoming one with "the light" that is everything in existance.
Dunno, I have been to that place before though, and most of Dax's songs remind me of the death trip(s) that I've had. |

And by the way, what is up with the faggy kids coming here to complain about this not being "X-core"??? Fuck you, this site is for SONG MEANINGS not for some kids to score scene points. OMG no screaming, this iz lame :( Goddamn, I have seen FoT like 5 times and there are always little girl-boys there, in tight ass jeans, when did that start being cool??? I've met Thomas and he is for real a great guitarist who writes all of the music for FoT. If he wants to do a slow song with singing, get over it - ITS HIS BAND! Guess what, he makes more money than you do because he knows how to write good music. Fuck I had to sign up just to vent, I have been on songmeanings for years now to get lyrics, and I can't get over how many fucking kids just want to talk shit to look cool. Get over yourselves. |

Sounds like he is in a relationship where both parties are cheating. Hence, "Better kept secret, waiting on a better day". He is feeling either jealous or insecure so he is self-destructive, sabotaging his relationship, even though he knows it is what he wants. He is too late though, and always ends up trying to mend stuff after it's way too late, and the chic won't even give him the time to explain (though he probably couldn't explain anyways). I guess it does seem pretty self-explanatory since 99% of songs could be about girls.
Alternate explanation - He is always sabotaging stuff that is good in his life in general, and it's too late to turn back. He regrets all of life's missed opportunities, and is constantly thinking about how he f*cked up everything (nothing's making sense). He wants to ask God for help ("is anybody listening?") but it's too late, God has turned his back. Now he is just left a living silhouette, as in a body without a soul, with nothing to give back. |
