Although the song's meaning has a lot of interpretations to it, I feel that it has more of an inclination towards war and violence. Army officers out there are indeed saving lives, but at the cost of killing others, hence the line "tell me, would you kill to save a life?" The Hurricane represents every issue that ultimately causes the destruction of the world, and eventually will lead to the downfall of mankind. He goes on to question how these problems and conflicts can possibly continue all under God's eyes, who supposedly should be our Savior, hence the line "Where did you go?" and "Where is your God?" He longs to hear a heartbeat to not only give him the reassurance that he is not alone (that there are other people around him), but also to remind him that he is a human being (& that, despite everything, he still has a soul). |

Agreed, this is such a powerful and emotional song. It can be interpreted in many different ways, and it can be applied in various concepts too, such as relationships (going through a break-up) or just struggles and problems in general. I'd like to think of it as him retelling a certain story or part of his life, where he "fell down but got back up again." This song is basically reaching out the point that there will be times when you will fall, get hurt, and feel pain; however, that should not stop you from getting back up again and continuing to live your life. |
