great song, great story. my eyes watered a bit when i first heard it. i had originally assumed the mermaid parade was referencing the "plenty of other fish in the sea" sentiment, but then found out that there is an actual Mermaid Parade on Coney Island that often features partially-naked women. how do you think this parade relates to the story? why did he go to the mermaid parade rather than the airport? |

the last verse makes me think its about a 10-year high school reunion. he's coming back home after 10 years, and seems slightly insecure about the way he has changed. and in the verse before, he mentions people making jokes at others expense, and comments on the effects that those jokes may have made over time. just a thought. |
