yes, i agree with the Cain and Abel referece, and i believe you may be onto something, Enthused Punk. very perceptive interpretation. also, 'Abel' is the name of a song by US band The National, which The Jezabels are fans of. perhaps there is a connection to that song as well? |

| The Jezabels – Be A Star Lyrics

i wonder, perhaps Hayley is talking about herself? 'we were only 17 but we were going to be stars' ??
after all, it is set in the first person and it is quite nostalgic.

i love the Jezabels! best australian band atm. i mean i'm not one to participate in nationalism (i hate that shit!) but this makes you proud to be an Aussie. now, someone please tell me, is this song about a serial killer or some other psychotic person, coz Hayley's lyrics really stump me. beautifully poetic, but damn confusing =-S |

surely it's "cannot hold a candle for every pretty girl" doesn't that make more sense? definately my favourite off American Slang. and i thought it was "liars, lovers and con-men" but now i'm not so sure. still, i like my interpretation better. sounds more poetic |

i'm pretty sure it's "some things papa done aint right" as said before. and also i've heard a live version of this and Brian sang "spent a lifetime just to get older" which makes a lot more sense than "over". perhaps it's one of those deceiving pieces of recording?? |

the first line is "losing's sort of a past time" and it's "the coffee's not settling anything and i'm as tired as i've ever been." and yes it is "fake memories." i have the album, this is what's written in the lyrics booklet. fuckin' masterpiece this album truely is. i just wish they'd hurry up and make some new stuff, it's been five years. glad there's one band i don't have to worry about them selling out. |

| Rise Against – Kotov Syndrome Lyrics

i think this song is about the Cold War. Rise Against are hailed for their political emphesis on their songs etc. at the start he talks about keeping the peace at all costs (for if they don't, the whole world would go up in smoke) and later he says that he was born in a country that lives by the sword (meaning america; war hungry etc) and the chorus says they spin out of control, which indeed they did. big time. and the word in the title, Kotov, not sure what it means but it sounds very russian. |

i don't think this song has anything to do with a woman. i believe from the lyrics it's about getting into a serious fight with one of your best friend (probably whilst drunk, knowing the Trio) and all your other friends turning agaisnt you and taking the other friend's side. hence the sarcasm in the line "glad i have people i call friends" |

did it occur to anyone that this song might have a double meaning?
yes it is about Jack Kerouac but earlier it was said that Ben went there to write Narrow Stairs but failed in the inpiration department, maybe "truth" refers to inspiration in this song.
i.e: Ben went there because he thought it would be a great place to try to write something meaningful because of the place's history but when he got there he found that things "didn't play like they did in his mind" because the place and indeed Jack Kerouac didn't offer any spurs of genius, so at the end of it all he decided to leave, no closer to any kind of "truth"
"as i must assume was the case with you" |

the second verse makes me think is a father telling his son that he must earn his place in the world and that he is not going to be sheltered by his family:
"new rays of light must fight for a place between the leaves, so son don't seem surprised to find no shade beneath this tree" |

don't get me wrong, i do quite like this song, but perhaps the Trio are running our of ideas? you take the intro and bridge of this song and it sounds almost exactly the same as the bridge in "Goodbye Forever" off their earlier self-titled album. it's not the first time they've done this either, the guitar in the verse of "Calling All Skeletons" sounds very similar to that in the verse of "Deathbed"
but despite this observation, still lovin' the Trio =) |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
my favourite song of all time. possibly the most poetic thing i have ever heard.
to me, this song portreys a middle-aged couple who have fallen out of love but stay together because it's all that they know. the line "now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident" is so beautiful, talking about how he doesn't know what he's doing anymore or who he is.
the title "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" refers to the way they sleep, with their backs to each other as would two brothers if they had to sleep in a single crappy hotel bed, a bit like Earl and Randy out of My Name Is Earl.
and finaly it is brought to a close with the wonderful line which the song opened with:
"you may tire of me, as our December sun is setting, 'cause i'm not who i used to be"

| Youth Group – Forever Young Lyrics

|
isn't this site supposed to be about what the song means? not whether you like it or not. if you don't like it, why the hell would you be commenting on it??
this song is about youth suicide; "let us die young or let us live forever"
generally your last memory of someone is how they were when they died, hence the person or people in the song want their youth to live on in everyone's memories forever. how do they ensure that this happens? they commit suicide while they are still young letting thier beauty live on forever, like glistening diamonds. |

| Alkaline Trio – Hell Yes Lyrics

i haven't been through all these comments so hope i'm not repeating. to me, this song is simply about drinking and how satan never let him down. obviously there are references to a relationship gone wrong, and what does he do? he drinks! and he enjoys it!
"bless me dark father (satan) for i have sinned. i've done it before and i'll do it again. it keeps me warm and makes me smile (alcohol makes you feel warm and makes you have a good time generally by taking your mind off all that other shit that's been happening"
and the last line "been beneath me all the while" or "you been on my shoulder all the while" refers to the devil being beneath him in hell or alternatively on his shoulder whispering sweet nothings in his ear, and helping him through the shit times in his life. |

| Alkaline Trio – Another Innocent Girl Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
i have been an Alkaline Trio fan for quite a rew years now, From Here To Imfirmary was the first album from them i got.
i always thought this song was about a rapist. typical things like he never tells anyone how he feels, drinks alot (perhaps to wash away his guilt) and walks with a glass caine just add to that idea. but the big factor that lead me to this conclusion is the line "another innocent girl just made his list, that self-pitty shit is just too hard to resist"
need i say more? |

| Lisa Mitchell – Valium Lyrics

|
i get the feeling this song is from the point of view of someone in a serious relationship who is terminally ill. it's got that typical sad music and Lisa compares her lover's heart to valium which could mean that his love is her comfort and painkiller. also one of the lines talks about "meeting the maker" meaning God, which is a reference to death. |

| Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics

the line is "it was impossible but WE RAN IT GOOD, WE RAN IT GOOD" not "we really couldn't"
and a friend of mine had an interesting theory that this song might have refferences to playing chicken.
"i don't wear eyelids so i don't miss the last laugh of this show"
would you be blinking if you were headed full speed at an oncoming car??
