@[Fuzzbean:53801] Very interesting observations . I can put you right about Piccadilly Circus and the Hundred Schoolgirls at least. The word Piccadilly comes from Spanish and Portuguese, and means pecadillos or "little sins" which would no doubt have been committed in an area full of brothels and coffee houses which gave rise to the seedy reputation Soho enjoyed until very recently. The word "Circus" has nothing to do with clowns and a big top, that came much later. It was just another word for an intersection of different roads that wasn't on a square.
The schoolgirls came from the St.Joseph of Cluny Catholic Girls school which borders Hampstead Heath on the Highgate side, near the bathing ponds where Aqualung went to try and get some sun. I once taught History there and told a risqué joke about Michael Jackson that may or may not have cost me my job because my contract was not renewed.
"Mother Goose" may well have been a demented old lady who used to talk to herself, occasionally shout at passers-by and beg around the station in Hampstead Village but I have only the vaguest recollection of this person. There were other strange people squatting in the deconsecrated church at the top of the hill above the Royal Free Hospital. I parked my car in the entrance one night and was amazed to see this hippy character emerge from the church and ask me what I was doing.
So, yes, Hampstead Village is / was a strange place full of strange characters. |

@[jessy:53128] There is another spelling of Rommel, which is Romuald in French which may clear up the confusion, although Rommel is usually the name printed in lyric sheets. At the same time it's a common enough surname in Germany and no doubt some German immigrants to the US were called Rommel. There's no connection whatsoever to the German General and as you rightly point out, no connection between Emmylou in Powderfinger and Emmylou Harris either. It just so happens that Emmylou is a Southern name, not untypical of hillbilles and the like, and the family in Powderfinger are portrayed as being distanced from mainstream society, most probably involved in some illegal activitiy that the powers that be decided had to be curtailed. I know there was an "illegal" native settlement on a river in Canada that was suppressed by the government but I'm not sure when. |

@[iceberg210:53127] I don't think Erwin Rommel was the Rommel being cited in this song. Apart from anything else, he was long dead before he could have ever spoken to Neil, and furthermore, while he may have been able to drive a tank, I certainly never heard of him flying a plane. |

Clearly you've never been in a classy Casino where the language used is always French. Just watch any James Bond movie. French also adds a certain touch of the exotic, which is what this song is all about. Black Diamond Bay has always been for me one of the French speaking islands in the Caribbean. |
