I saw Mountain Goats last week, and basically this came about because he was watching Scarface with his newborn daughter one night, when it got to the line, "Fuck Gaspar Gomez! | This is such an insane song. It took me a couple listens to get into the spoken intro, but now I absolutely love it. I had thought, after a few disappointing side projects (both Mystic Valley Band records, Monsters of Folk) that Oberst might have lost his edge, but... if this is really the last Bright Eyes record, then he's going out with a big, honking bang. Everyone here is talking a lot about how great this is as a love song, stating that the "I can't believe" is a statement of disbelief, basically saying "I can't believe how lucky I am." But what people seem to be missing is that he's saying "I don't believe I could still fall in love with you," saying that, basically, if it were to happen today, he doesn't think he could do it again. The rest of the song is extremely sweet, but remember, people: that voice who delivers the very first line is the woman who inspired, legend has it, the drug/alcohol fueled maelstrom that preceded and coincided with the making of the record. Or, as the sticker on my copy says, "A psychedelic gospel album full of songs about heartbreak and drug abuse; a flat-out masterpiece" The song is extremely dreamlike, but that dream is interrupted, violently, by the drum beats at the beginning of "Come Together." Because that's all it is: it's a floating dream, and like all dreams, if you don't accept that they're going to end, reality is going to, as they say, fuck your shit up. |

Damn, Smintitude. When I saw him here in Portland, he talked after "Age Of Adz" about the big themes of the record (In short, the Apocalypse), and then played "Heirloom," and then, said the following: "Okay, so this next one isn't about nuclear winds or solar flares or any of that. It's not quite a bullshit metaphor. Story goes like this, and this is very, very brief: We have Jason Pierce, AKA J. Spaceman, who was dating Spiritualized's keyboardist Kate Radley. However, unbeknown to Pierce, Radley had gone and secretly married Richard Ashcroft, who you may know of because of his band The Verve. This was shortly before Ladies & Gentlemen... was released, causing Pierce to jump from recreational user to complete and total addict. This is where lines like “Sometimes have my breakfast right off of a mirror / And sometime have it straight out of a bottle” ("Home of the Brave") and the John Prine reference in "Cop Shoot Cop..." ("Hey man, there's a hole in my arm where all the money goes") come from. And, of course, "Come Together." Without context, Ladies and Gentlemen... stands as a record of the howling pangs of the lovelorn, but in context (keep in mind, Radley was still in the band for the record), it serves as the permanent article of what can go wrong with somebody. There are no real metaphors here. Little Johnny is a fucked-up user, and he doesn't hurt, but he doesn't feel a lot of anything else either. He even goes as far as to refer to him as "Little J," for God's sake. It's pretty straightforward. |
