@[rhcpayne:23116] - agree with this comment. Infact my favourite part is the wicked guitar sound with the whistling. I like to think about it in terms of sandcastles on construction, ie of the permanence and endurability of relationships.... The one is the "wet sand" forms only briefly before being washed away by the tide, no matter how much effort you put into building it is still formed on wet sand. That said, it is John's thought, and was clearly meaningful to him (after all he had a page of lyrics, and really drove the melody and rearranged the chord progressions)... Obviously has a very different meaning to John, as Anthony just took those words, and worked backwards incorporating ideas of love and drugs, which clashed with John's perception. I think the wicked outtro was John putting his own stamp of meaning on the song |

Okay I'm just going to take a stab at this, the interpretations here differ from how I viewed the meaning. My interpretation is very symbolic - and I believe its a song about sex, differences and the unspoken. He is after a fling or affair whereas she is looking for commitment. "Planned a show" - its of his own making. He conceived the idea. And it is a "show", not genuine but trickery "Trees and Balloons" - rudimentary symbolism, eroginous body parts hope thats clear enough "Ice cream snow" - Ejaculation "See you in June" - What is important about June? Nothing for me in New Zealand its winter. But in the US, its the beginning of summertime = Holidays. So its Holiday sex, or nothing important a fling. ie he isn't taking it seriously. "Could of known I would reveal" and "how's it she knows, she knows, she knows"- Her intuition can read his intentions without anything being said, possibly she becomes aware that she's just a bit on the side. Or at least it seems to him that this is the case "Should have known I would conceil your way" - Not so certain. Possibly emotional detatchment, keeping his emotions seperate from hers. She has a very different "way" of doing things = long term commitment, so he is keeping her emotional needs very separate from his. Conceil could also have a double meaning that he is hiding this affair from others. "Colours show After the moon" - During the day time, we can see each other for who they really are. Day and night here are metaphorical. So after a period of time, all becomes clear about the other person. "I should go" - When a relationship is beyond salvation and there is nothing you can do to salvage the damage from the other person you say "I should go". You say this in the hope that the second person says "wait….". So he is hoping she still wants him despite what she now knows about him. "See you in June, your way" - He is keeping the doomed relationship going. Summertime and "your way" are illusions of better times, he is making empty promises that things will be better in the future and that he'll do things the way she wants them. However.... "Open your eyes to these I must lie" - He feels guilty about it. The promises are just deceitful. |
