| Rainbow – Man On The Silver Mountain Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Well, most people seem to think that this song is about a religious or mythical figure. There is Moses (climbed Mt. Sinai to get the ten commandments), Prometheus who stole fire from the Gods on Mt. Olympus ("come down with fire"). Many religions have a figure who ascends a mountain (seen as a holy place between heaven and earth) and comes back to his people with some special knowledge. The Transfiguration of Jesus also occurred on a mountain - Jesus supposedly became radiant, and spoke to Moses and Elijah, then the voice of God proclaimed Jesus to be his son in the presence of several of the apostles. Ancient people also had strong associations between the sun and the wheel, and the symbol of the "solar wheel" often represented cyclical time (days, months, and years all being measured by rotations of heavenly bodies). So when Dio sings "I'm the wheel... I'm the sun... I'm the day... I'm the night..." these are the themes that he seems to be drawing on. |

| Black Sabbath – The Wizard Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think xl5ron has the right idea. this song is about a Wizard being a valued member of a community - the people look to him to protect them from evil spirits. Everyone is happy when he walks by because the demons fear/respect him. Unlike Gandalf - a commanding figure who leads an epic fight against evil - I picture the wizard in this song as more of a village priest who is loved by the superstitious medieval people. Some Orthodox Christians still believe that the sound of a bell can disperse evil. | |
