Fall Out Boy – West Coast Smoker Lyrics 14 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks of Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins (the one that goes "despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage") when the line "like putting wings on lead" comes on?
Seriously.

Fall Out Boy – Dance, Dance Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the line "I'm two quarters and a heart down" is about the Legend of Zelda.

Cause in the Zelda games, you get heart containers and when you take damage they empty and you have to collect hearts and stuff.

My Chemical Romance – I Never Told You What I Do For a Living Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is actually after he kills the 1,000 men and is reunited with his lover. He has to admit all of this to her, but they're together again. That explains the first bit of the song.
"And we'll all dance along/to the tune of your death" I think has a double meaning - it's about the protagonist and those he has killed, AND Satan and his deal with the protagonist.
"We'll love again/we'll laugh again..." etc. are about how he's back with his girl.
Then, abruptly (the first time that is sung) it switches to "Well never again..." which is about the lovers' final death.
The repetition of the "And we'll love again/we'll laugh again/we'll cry again/and we'll dance again..." comes after their deaths, when they're both in Hell. This time, "And it's better off this way..." is about how it doesn't really matter anymore for them.
The repeat of "Well never again..." is to end it, and a bitter after note to "and it's better off this way/so much better off this way".

Just my opinion.

My Chemical Romance – Dead! Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that parts of it are about the Patient. Like the chorus and the bridge.
"Have you heard the news that you're dead?" doesn't just mean that he's necessarily died already -- only that he's dead as in there is no escaping his death (like "I'm dead for this.").

The bridge is what makes that - it's the Patient's doctor talking right to him. If "The End." is the Patient telling the story posthumously, then this is where he'll start -- when he only has two weeks to live.

My Chemical Romance – Sleep Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought that it was about the Patirnt's flashbacks to his time as a soldier.

And now I just learned that the beginning recording is actually Gerard and... wow. I think it works either way, though.

My Chemical Romance – DESTROYA Lyrics 15 years ago
The lyrics up on the main lyrics bit are correct. I checked them against my booklet.

Also, I only just cracked open my liner notes for the lyrics for this... I've been singing "but I believe in the enemy" instead of "but I believe we're the enemy" for a week. I need to reinterpret this song now.

Also, I love Gerard's random sex noises/dolphin impressions/dolphin sex noises.

My Chemical Romance – Mama Lyrics 15 years ago
Also, I think this is equally directed to the Patient's mother and to the character of Mother War (in particular, the chorus). Mostly the verses are directed to his mother, though. "She said you ain't no son of mine..." is also about his mother. Liza's part is from the Patient's mother to the Patient. And the last part is looking back on fighting and being a soldier. I dunno if this is just my tired ramblings or if it makes sense, so...

My Chemical Romance – Mama Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, I think it might be my favorite track from Black Parade (along with The Sharpest Lives and possibly Dead!... oh, and Teenagers).

I just got back into My Chemical Romance after... forever of not listening to them (I blame the new album, so excited!). And I was listening to this song and thought, "Wait... when did I stop listening to 'The Black Parade' and start listening to 'My Chemical Romance Does Pink Floyd's The Wall'?"

Nine Inch Nails – Meet Your Master Lyrics 15 years ago
I have two interpretations.

THE INTERPRETATION IN REGARDS TO THE ALBUM:
It's a group from the Resistance capturing some sort of government dude and interrogating him.
Talking about how they reverse the power (normally the government interrogates the Resistance people) and torture him to get information out. The lines "countdown to the end" and "coming disaster" refer to the warnings given in The Presence. "And we're headed there faster" is about how the government isn't doing anything about it and in fact furthering it.
I might do an in depth interpretation of this some other time...

THE GEEKY INTERPRETATION IN REGARDS TO DOCTOR WHO:
It's the Master talking to the Doctor.

"Bow down in position
Against the polished steel
This is something different
You'll like the way this feels"
He's going to torture the Doctor... why? because he can.

"No time for asking questions
No time for wondering
We've heard enough from you now
We've heard everything"
Which is a bit obvious to me, the Master is simply fed up with the Doctor.

"We're going to play a new game
You'll put on this blindfold
You'll do what we tell you
You'll do as your told"
Again, the torture aspect. He's sick of being thwarted by his rival.

"Used to be the leader
Now comes the time to serve
Maybe we show some mercy
Maybe you get what you deserve"
The Doctor's always painted as a hero, and the Master is also sick of that.

"Count down to the end
Gotta make it come faster faster
Right around the bend
Is a coming disaster"
The Master plans to orchestrate some big evil thing to happen to Earth, knowing where to hit his foe.

"Count down to the end
And we're headed there faster
Come on down my friend
It's time to meet your master"
And again, to the torture scenario. Note that they used to be friends before (hush now! spoilers).

"You've left quite a mess here
Under your stewardship
You thought you'd figured it out but
You'll learn your place in this"
The Master completely disagrees with the Doctor on everything, especially his technical pacifism.

"Might take some convincing
For you to see the truth
There are so many things
We've got in store for you"
More torture! Man, this guy is a sadist.

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about being a trans woman and feeling like you can never quite escape your past as someone who was perceived as male.

"half underwater
i'm half my mother's daughter
a fraction's left up to dispute"
though she knows she's her mother's daughter, people still perceive her as male.

"the whole collection
half off the price they're asking
in the halfway house of ill repute"
the halfway house is the community. ill repute? well, the majority opinion on being trans is... well, not really positive.

"half accidental
half pain full instrumental
i have a lot to think about"
she feels it was an accident that she was born into a male body.

"you think they're joking?
you have to go provoke him...
i guess it's high time you found out"
again, people still perceiving her as male.

"it's half biology and half corrective surgery gone wrong
you'll notice something funny if you hang around here for too
long ago in some black hole before they had these pills to take it back
i'm half jill
and half jack"
continuing along with the sentiment of the song...

"but if you listen
you'll learn to hear the difference
between the halfs and the half nots"
the halfs are trans men and women.
the half nots are cisgendered people.
if you listen to the character presented, you get the idea.

"and when i let him in i feel my stitches getting sicker
i try to wash him out but like she said:the blood is thicker
i see my mother in my face
but only when i travel
i run as fast as i can run
but
jack comes tumbling after...."
sometimes she lets people she used to know back into her life, but they only remind her of a painful time ("long ago in some black hole before they had these pills to take it back...")

"and when i'm brave enough and find a clever way to kick him out
and i'm so high not even you and all your love could bring me down
on 83rd he never found the magic words to change this fact:
i'm half jill
and half jack"
i don't know what 83rd means, i'm guessing it might've been a street where the character's psychologist's office was as a child. that or where the hospital was.

"i'm halfway home now
half hoping
for a showdown
cause i'm not big enough to house this crowd
it might destroy me
but i'd sacrifice my body
if it meant i'd get the jack part OUT"
she's half there. to being her.
she wants to be known as female so badly...

"see

jack

run....."
ends the song rather nicely.
plans for being fully who she wants to be.

Green Day – 86 Lyrics 16 years ago
Nope, they were banned. Gilman doesn't let bands signed to major record labels played. After Dookie was released Green Day couldn't go back.

Another notable example of this was Rancid.

Unannounced is the key term there. the band that was playing stopped in the middle of their set to give Green Day some stage time.

Green Day – Maria Lyrics 16 years ago
I think Maria is Whatsername.

They're both described as rebels ("She's a Rebel" from American Idiot, and from this song "she's a rebel's forgotten son/an export of the revolution,").

"And no-one knows where Maria went." What if she ran away from wherever, started going by Whatsername, and now is known by Whatsername ("from Chicago to Toronto..."). Maria might've been around when "somebody shot the president" and ran away, either because she did or she was afraid of being framed. The running-away-when-trouble-comes matches Whatsername, who ran away from the City when Jimmy started going seriously crazy.

IT's about how they were kicked out of 924 Gilman St. after being signed to a major record label. T obe 86-ed is to be kicked out of a bar, I think.

Green Day – Haushinka Lyrics 16 years ago
Hm, the whole "girl he fell for and never saw again" thing makes sense if it really was scrapped for Kerplunk! and rerecorded for Nimrod.

I wouldn't believe it if it's a Nimrod-sessions-only song though, Billie pretty much only sticks to his Adie.

(...I think Maria is Whatsername but that's a whole nother story from the Maria interpretation)

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics 16 years ago
This song's always, to me, been about alienating those you love due to drugs.

"Scar tissue that I wish you saw/sarcastic mister know-it-all/close your eyes and I'll kiss you..." He wishes that the people he loves could see the emotional scars leading up to the drug abuse. They call him a "sarcastic mister know-it-all" when he tells them there's a reason behind his addiction.

"Push me up against the wall/young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra/falling all over myself/to lick your heart and taste your health...." I think this line is about joining prostitution to pay for the addiction.

"Blood loss in a bathroom stall/southern girl with a scarlet drawl/wave goodbye to ma and pa..." Bleeding from a needle. The girl represents the addiction -- and, to me, "scarlet drawl" invokes images of blood. Again, he's alienating those he loves -- his family.

"Soft-spoken with a broken jaw/step outside but not to brawl..." Beaten by the dealer due to unpaid money. Step outside... refers to him promising to pay it back, and going outside to make another quick deal.

"Autumn's sweet wind/call it fall/I'll make it to the moon/if I have to crawl..." Being high. He promises to get so high some time that he'll make it to the moon.

And the repeating line, "with the birds I'll share this lonely view," is where I got the main idea for alienation-through-addiction. He's high, and he's all alone.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Parallel Universe Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, it's about contemplating the different layers of existence -- the world that is perceived by your subconscious (your dreams) and the "real" world, which is perceived by your conscious mind.

"Deep inside of a parallel universe/it's getting harder and hard to tell/what came first." This is a topic he's thought of before -- if his dreams or his "reality" came first.

"Underwater where thoughts can breathe easily/far away you were made in a sea/just like me." First, he's talking to himself, and then to someone else (who is continuously mentioned).

"Christ I'm a sidewinder/a California king." Some dreams put you in the shoes of another. A snake, for example.

"I swear it's everywhere/it's everything." Just like the world of reality surrounds us, so does the world of dreams.

"Staring straight up into the sky/oh my my/a solar system that fits in your eye/microcosm." Sleeping outside -- you'll be staring into the sky. In your dreams, the universe seems smaller (microcosm) and you tend to dream about what you were thinking of before.

"You could die but you're never dead spiderweb." In your dreams, you can die, but you still live in the real world. You can die in the real world, but your mind lives on.

"Just take a look at the stars in your head/fields of space kid." Going back to the "microcosm" line. Imagining a universe in your dreams.

(skipping chorus)

"Psychic changes are born in your heart, entertain/A nervous breakthrough that makes us the same." Your heart, your subconscious mind, is where things change on a deeper level. The second part of this block goes back to the line about being made in a sea.

"Bless your heart, girl." The character Anthony has been speaking to, who gets what he's saying.

"Kill the pressure it's raining on salty cheeks." Crying, obviously.

"When you hear the beloved song/I am with you." Being together in spirit. Also going back to "you could die..." -- even if he dies in real life, he'll be with the girl in spirit.
